Just getting started into basic woodworking.
 

Now that I’m retired I want to get started on some woodworking projects. I’m never going to be able to do anything like what I see on this thread, but I do want to build some basic bookcases for our sunporch. And also put some shelving up in my garage. I don’t have a lot of room for a tablesaw, but after doing a lot of research, I settled on a Dewalt 7491 portable tablesaw. I already have a good portable miter saw, and numerous sanders, drills, etc. I like that the Dewalt has a fence that will open up to 32 inches on the right side, but stores in a fairly compact space. Once I get my garage shelving built, I’ll be able to store the saw so it is relatively well protected. I also like that there are any number of YouTube videos on using this particular saw. And lots of accessories to buy!

I had a very similar saw for at least 10 years and built a ton of stuff with it. Enjoy!

Gawldamn, that camera is gorgeous. You and your family and ancestors and descendants should be proud of you for that level of craftsmanship. Nice.

My "carpentry" skills are way more rudimentary, but I did finally get around to a project last week that has been bugging me for a while; I had lots of wasted space above my drill press and I had a vision of shelves for my various specialty vises; in addition, there was more wasted space (because of earlier poor planning) where I thought I'd like to store my bench grinders and such.... (I've been on this kick lately of trying to store "likes with likes". It has every hallmark of an idea that could maybe lead to obsessive behavior.)

I drew up some crude plans and was about to head to the local lumberyard, but a lucky occurrence guided me to a shelving unit that someone was throwing out. It netted me 6 8' and 4 6' two-bys and some quarter inch hard masonite plus some scraps of various woods including clear hard maple. Pretty good score for free. 1 of the 8 footers had a pretty gnarly twist, but the rest of the wood was straight and clean. Previous owner said it was built in '94 and believe me when I tell you, if this is a representative example, the difference in the quality of dimensional wood from then to now is shocking. Score. Free. Happy day.

So, a few days of light, very slow work has netted me a chance to tetris even more crap into my garage for my family and friends to toss into an ever larger dumpster, but it kept me out of the bars or the gambling dens and gave the neighbors a chance to wonder aloud what in the world goes on over there. I'm very pleased with the way both of these projects have turned out and man, free is a very good price for lumber.

A good starting point is to buy a 'basic' shelf/cupboard and then add your own trim, baseboard, crown etc. I hate IKEA, but I have made some of their stuff look pretty good.

I have also done built-ins from scratch, and I sure appreciate the time saved by buying a prefab cabinet.

Only 1 block grinder? I see a spot for another one!

For those that don't know there is a large following on GJ for Craftsman block grinders.

You should have seen the Baldor that I sold. The guy drove 100 miles for it he wanted it so bad....

I've never used a prefab as a base, but I have done a few built-ins from scratch, and yes, it's certainly a time suck.

It was time to refinish all the tables, benches and counters I built long ago for the deck at my mountain home. A harsh environment. The temperature swing can be 100° and in a few months this stuff will all be snow drifts. I don't have high expectations but I'm trying 3 coats of oil based Helmsman spar eurothane by MinWax. I sanded with my disc sander instead of a belt sander for a rustic surface. In these pics you can see it better on the bench.

Wow, looks great! Harsh environment for sure. I assume that finish should protect about as well as could be expected.

All my closets are done with IKEA PAX cabinets (modified). And my wife's sewing room is six doors of PAX, on a platform, to add baseboard, and crown molding up top. They don't look like IKEA.

I've done the same. Used 4 large PAX cabinet doors to make a wall to wall closet and cut up one of their cabinets for a laundry room sink/vanity.

I always head to the returned/closeout department at our IKEA.
They always have doors and shelves super cheap. $5 for a 6' door, etc..
Cheap material for building shop items. ;)

I don't like most river/resin stuff (except Tim's is orders of magnitude better than almost everything else I've ever seen).

Besides Tim's work, this is the second river/resin work that I've seen that I think is pretty cool.
