Go for it. I had a cabin overlooking Lake Cle Elum for 37 years. I built it doing most of the work myself. Had $45,000 invested. Sold for $298,000 and more good times than you'll ever know.

A close friend's cabin and boat on the Allegheny River near Franklin. I love the area and am actively seeking my own riverfront location.

The best camps are the ones your friends own and that you can use.

I would NOT do it, unless it has an attraction right next to it that has you in the area anyway. I.e. if you are a diehard skier, a cabin makes sense, or if you hunt an area hard and want some land to do it on anyway.

Otherwise, my camp is on wheels. Truck with off-road slide in camper. We have so much public land out west, I can go to different places and still be comfortable. The maintenance is minimal and if it needs it, I can do it in my driveway.

I know you are in a different area and public land camping is not as accessible and the weather isn't favorable much of the year either (too cold in winter and too muggy / buggy in the summer).

Let us know what you come up with!

Do you not have the COVID invasion where you are?
The price for any piece of vacant land within 3 hours of here is 5, if not 10 times the price it was 3 years ago. We always wanted some land in the bush with a cabin or a trailer, but not now that we would need a mortgage to buy it. Sad really as the city people that buy them probably never go there.

Same here.

I was shopping as part of a 5 year plan that was put on hold due to the stupidity around the Covidian era.

We wanted to buy 5-20 vacant acres in North Florida as a get away / eventual full time home site as I phase out of the day to day of my company.

Prices went bonkers. So instead I am saving and waiting. When no one is buying, then I will. I am patient.

Someone stole my Pole Barn idea earlier in this thread. My first order of business is to build a decent size pole barn with a cement floor an RV can park under.

Place Septic / Well nearby to hook up to, and see about running power to the property. If not an option Generator will work until we are there for a longer duration then we will consider Solar + battery storage if Power cannot be run in cheap.

I have no problem being off grid.

Wife wants to build a small house on the land to eventually move to full time. The pole barn would then be converted into a screened in outdoor area with fireplace, outdoor kitchen, dining and general hang out area.

Love hearing and seeing other peoples cabins and camps, 100% agree Greg wins, built not bought always wins

Not really a 'cabin' but a small, ugly house built to 70's to Eastern European standards on a postage stamp sized plot

The million $ beautiful view that over looks a national park was too good to pass

Cost was around new 997 money but annual running costs about the same, best bit is it won't depreciate

It's my next building project after my UK man cave is done, itching to get stuck into it

My family has a small cabin on beautiful Lake Martin in Alabama, only about 30 minutes from me. My Grandparents bought the property there in the late 50's. Lots of great memories made at this place and more to be made for sure!!!

Hey Capt. Ahab- I don't think your house is ugly at all. Very European, stout and sensible. Your fire wood looks 4 feet long, how deep are your wood burning stoves? And where is this? Spectacular mountain range, looks like our Rockies

Thanksgiving a year ago at the Armadillo Ranch. Card tables set up for social distancing for the different family units. In addition to the main house shown here there are four other buildings with bed and bath facilities so was easy to spread out. Chairs around the tables have not yet been deployed. The chiminea is blazing away in the yard on the right to help take the chill off.

Go for it! You will not lose money by parking it in a getaway.

Got a 30' trailer in NW WI on 3.25 acres. Screen porch on the front. Electric, water, outhouse and a boat. Off water and my taxes are $128/year. Hell, my DirecTV bill is close to that. 400 lakes in my county and I love to fish. Put lots of work into the privy and screen porch and lumber was cheap then.

I typically spend 40+ days a year there. Somehow, maintenance there is fun unlike at home.

That is the basic area Im looking at . Its a short beautiful drive up through rural Pa, and a really nice area . We have spent a good deal of time camping up there, and canoe trips down river ending in the town of Franklin .

I too have been looking, i found this a few years ago, ten acres, not too far away, but just far enough.

Sadly, instead going to the bank 1st, i figured to sell my 88 carerra to cut the loan amount even more, sadly, the property thatvno one had even called on sold the day after i looked at it.

I spent the first 35 years of my life going to the cottage every weekend, it got to be the boring same old-same old. Mom hated it, just meant she had to houses to clean and all the so called friends would show up for a free vacation every summer. I'm not knocking it, growing up at the cottage was a great childhood, privileged in fact, just not what the wife and I want to do.

We've decided to not buy a cottage, too expensive now anyways but we didn't want the usual RV life. Instead we're about to start building an "Exploration Explorer" based on a Mitsubishi Fuso FG 4x4 we just bought. It fits us as we loved our old Westphalia and this is sort of like a hulk sized westy.
Below isn't ours, but is somewhat like the truck we will be building.

Super sized Type II, i love it, very cool.
Well, if the crap really his the fan, North Fl will be a major target because of all the military bases, so i will head to the family property in upstate NY.
Truly off the grid, 104 acres, no electricity or indoor plumbing, not even sure a cell phone would work there.

Heating and cooking with wood stoves, fresh spring water.
