Question How would you weatherproof a piece of wood for outdoor use?

Resin?
Varnish?
Polyurethane?

Let's say it's a table top made of wood. Plywood or maybe pine.

TIA for your opinions!

You learned a new trade, cover it with waterproof flooring....??

If it's in the budget, I would pour epoxy.

How about several coats of boiled linseed oil? It soaks in and then polymerizes. It may be more of a pain then a pine/plywood table is worth.

I think the best would be whatever marine grade stuff they use on those beautiful old boats. I think anything not specifically designed for outdoor (sunny FL) is going to have a problem due to the sun. I think the marine stuff will have UV blockers/inhibitors that protect it from the sun.

I don't think you can finish plywood well enough with anything to use as a tabletop outside in FL.

After coating wave a propane torch over the table 6-10 inches from the surface to get rid of air bubbles.

Will the table see direct sunlight? Need to make sure the wood is very dry prior to sealing with epoxy or it can just lift off. Do you have any automotive bodyshop connections? Automotive polyurethane clear coat works quite well, I have used that for a Cherry table I made. How about using IPE T&G glued together and just oiling?

Epoxy is really the only solution, forget oil. It will never work with plywood plus, if that exterior(glue) or marine plywood ? going through all that work and expense, how about tile. Cheap tile can be had and they look great outside. Still, no guaranty with plywood and epoxy being outside.

That nasty carcinogenic copper green works great but stinks for quite awhile. For a table top you'd want to put a glass top on it as you don't want to have any skin contact. You can purchase pressure treated plywood but once it's cut the edges are exposed. Regular exterior ply will hold up ok if it's covered, it's just plywood that uses water proof glue for the lamination.

Soak it in oil.

Water won't even stick to it...

Concrete that looks like wood is your best bet.

Save your money, save your time and just wait for a nice outdoor table to show up on the curb. You have a gift!

Craig....yeah that's what I was referring to in post #1 when I wrote "resin".

Being a surfboard guy I have tons of experience in using it but never doing outdoor furniture.

Some good tips here.

I will probably sit the piece inside my climate controlled home for a month before applying the resin just to make sure it's dried out good.

Cheers all and thanks!

Or, you could use a specie of wood that's suited for the outdoors. I made this table and benches with Redwood 2x4 more than 30 years ago and recently capped it with a Cedar top. The Redwood was still fine, I just wanted a change of scenery and have stacks of pecked up Cedar I milled to 1½

FWIW I still remember what my first wood shop teacher taught me about linseed oil. Once a day for a week, once a week for a month and if needed once a month until you're satisfied. I've done it that way ever since with an annual touch up.

I sealed some of this Cedar with this finish you can get at Home Depot. The Cedar is fine by itself outside but I wanted a cleanable surface that hopefully keeps the wood from turning grey. I treated these counters and that table with this stuff last year so the jury is still out. Water still beads right up on it but I don't know how long it will last yet.
