I was in a Harley dealer and I don't know if I was in the Twilight Zone or a horror movie.

If I ever get a twin cam and I have to replace the cam chain tensioners and cams, I will not do this. I will pull the motor and take the pushrods out and reuse them. This is Freddy Kruger level of motorcycle repair and I'll leave it to the dealers to do this.

But... It was never intended to be hi-tech. That's the appeal of it.

Honda/Ducati do a perfectly good job of that.

Ha, today a gangsta was stopped at the lights. I rode past on my electric scooter and nodded approval at his HD he looked at my scooter and nodded, then we both burst out laughing.

It's common. Then replace with adjustable pushrods. Of course if you have nothing but time and you want to pull the engine that's an option. But if you're paying hourly rates at a dealership, that's different.

How many companies have lasted 120 years?

Ducati's are nice bikes and someday I may get a 999 for my collection and garage art after the S1000RR and a Triumph, but not that practical for day to day use IMO. But, these days there's bikes for everyone out there.

So, for Harley's 120th anniversary:

Quote:
Harley-Davidson Inc.’s 120th anniversary celebration this July in Milwaukee will feature performances by rock bands Foo Fighters and Green Day at Veterans Park on the city’s Lake Michigan shoreline. Find out who else will be performing at the big event.
Not exactly geezers they are catering to.

So, for Harley's 120th anniversary:
Having owned a couple of Moto Guzzi’s over the years, they turned 100 years old in 2021. Among the Guzzi faithful there’s a saying about Moto Guzzi...”the motorcycle company that has been going out of business for 100 years”.

A quick and cursory search on "cutting Harley pushrods" led me to this forum, with the photo you just posted (scroll down a bit). It was posted to that forum in 2010...

One of the most beautiful bikes ever made. From the little I've watched about it, no one's could... wrists were a thing for the rider in the video above. But he settled into the bike well enough. Good video.

So the reason for cutting the stock pushrods, is for quick work of installing a performance cam that is considered 'bolt-in'. Which means it has both more lift and duration but within the limits of the stock valve springs. Also a reason most people or some technicians don't know is valve float due lifter puck travel. Ideally you want just a slight preload on the lifter puck, just enough to compensate for cylinder/ head growth when at temperature. So this is where adjustable pushrods come in with a performance cam install. You set the preload outlined above. The factory set the lifter puck @mid travel in the lifter to compensate for varying heights in the case, cylinder, head. Fine for a stock production engine, but not for a performance engine.

(Gee. Alll this time I thought that "classic HD sound" was acheived by advancing timing until it knocked, loosening the exhaust header bolts a full turn, and turning the idle-air in until it starts to stall and stink)

I see now....I thought you were talking about problems with the Gold Wings.
Almost every bike I've owned has been a Honda. Never had any problems.
