I do for cars that get driven a lot. Its not even about the money I just admire efficiency in engineering and philosophically appreciate conservation where it doesn't cause undue duress.

Wife car is a highlander hybrid, put a fair amount of effort to seek out hybrid version even though break even point is like 80k miles. We have been averaging 37-38 mpg in mixed driving.

My daily driver gets around 30 mpg though requires premium.

Its at least on the list of things I consider for a daily. Actually all my fun cars have been relatively fuel efficient 4 cyl as well: Lotuses, 4 cyl cayman, WRX Sti, Maybe I need to get a viper or supercharged mustang next

Someone said to me that the Porsche must use a lot of gas compared with the Corolla. I said no, if it was driven like the Corolla it wouldn't be much more. I said that shape just cuts through the air and it weighs a lot less than the corolla too.

When I buy a vehicle, it is because either I need it for a specific purpose, or I find it fun and/or interesting. I've had big Mercedes and big BMWs but I don't need a big "fine car" nor do I find them interesting anymore. Nothing Porsche sells now interests me. I'm satisfied with my garage as is and I don't see buying anything else on the horizon. The only car I am remotely considering is a plug-in EV - but not a Tesla.

A Nissan Leaf is very affordable, but they use a CHAdeMO fast charger which is on the way out. The Level 2 charger plug works fine at home, but is a little slower, maybe 20 miles per hour. It also has a smaller range than many EVs.

You could always try Hertz as they are getting rid of thier EV fleet. 2023 Model 3 is around $24k. If you qualify for the IRA credit, that would take $4k off the top.

Methinks the two are unrelated. While I don't choose my autos based on MPG (I personally can afford what I choose), I certainly don't like to see prices of gas (or anything) raised to stupid, unnecessary levels because of politics. There are many folks that are just starting out that suffer a lot for no reason.

So short sighted. A spike in oil/gas prices impacts folks that have economy cars as well. A 20% rise in gas price increases their costs 20% just like mine.

In addition, when the price of gas/oil spikes...the price of everything else goes up as well (it has a lot more impact than the mileage that my auto gets...on everyone).

Just purchased a 2024 4Runner, getting out of a 2018 Outback. They already don’t make ‘em like they used to, 4Runner inventory is basically nil now until the new 2025 style debuts.

Real-world driving has been 19-20 mpg for an 80 mile round trip commute, 2-3 days a week.

If I end up commuting 5 days a week and gas goes to $7, it represents an additional $3500 in annual gas cost over my old Outback. Given that it will last longer than a Subaru or nearly anything else, I think I am OK with this. By the time I need to replace it, EV tech may be more mature and worth buying, or we will collectively admit that regulating ICE out of existence is not a viable plan.

Worst case, I buy an economical third car to share some of the commuting miles.
Worst worst case, I anticipate there will be buyers for 5th gen 4Runners for some time in the event I don’t want to drive the wheels off it. Toyota will be aggressive about fixing the problems with their new turbo truck engines, but I still don’t see light duty gas turbo engines standing the test of time in salty winter locations. There’s just less to go wrong with the 4.0.

no one else suffers, just them. "oh darn, since i have a reasonable commuter car, the price of gas doesn't change my bills much"

meanwhile all i hear every day from my coworkers: "price of gas is 30 cents higher today!"

Everyone that buys gas is suffering (even if some do not realize it). If gas goes up 20%...it goes up 20% for everyone that drives (regardless of where they live or what car they drive).

Maybe folks likely don't want to live where you live or drive the type of car you drive. I know that I do not.

I have a friend who was obsessed with trying to find the cheapest price on gas.

I used to mess with him by telling him I bought gas at somewhere and it was less than what the common price was. He would get pissed when I told himI was just messing with him.

I like the Gas Buddy app as prices for premium may vary but almost a dollar where I live and few stations post anything on their sign but the price for regular. It only takes a second to save $10-$20. Of course, I also like the McDonalds App and the Pizza Hut App...as I can often get my meal for half price. I can certainly afford full price, but where is the fun in that?

No. I have no idea what the price of gas is and don’t care. My wife is psyched we now have a Costco membership and usually knows the price of gas at every station around us. If we were discussing boats, I would care because range is important when considering a boat depending on what you want to do with it. With my vehicles, so long as I can find a gas station, that is all I care about….there is obviously no shortage of gas stations around here

Something that makes me laugh are people that will wait in line for an hour at a gas station, car idling the entire time, to save $0.05 per gallon. Probably the same people that dumped their SUVs for pennies on the dollar during the last price spike. A little math goes a long way!

Kroger gives you cents off of Kroger gas based on the amount of food you buy in a month. There isn't a Kroger gas station near me, so I don't care. But there is a family of five that we know that buys a lot of food and lines up their 3 cars at the Kroger gas station at the beginning of the month. They fill one, put the nozzle on the ground and bring up the next one, fill it, etc. They probably put 60-70 gallons of gas in their 3 SUVs. At 50 cents to a dollar off per gallon, I guess it's worth the hassle.

Then gas for the truck to tow them 2 hours away to burn it.

One thing that is crazy good on the gas is my little Honda 4 stroke 2hp outboard motor. Quiet, Honda-smooth and uses so little fuel.
