Which may or may not come. We could be right back into draught. You are right, though, if heavy rainfall does come it will be a new nightmare.

I’m thinking of more than just mud that is going to run off. I can’t imagine all the pollutants that must be mixed in with the ash.

5% of LA population evacuated; 5% under evacuation warnings. (equivalent numbers, since affected areas are not all in Los Angeles)

This map shows the fire areas in red, evacuation areas in light red and evacuation warning areas in dirty yellow.

Santa Anas have not calmed as much as hoped and no rain predicted until a week from now...

My sister lives in Highland Park near South Pasadena. They have packed up, but it would have to get all the way to the Rose Bowl to get to them. Assuming some Ahole does not set a fire, or that it skips a long distance to the south on the wind.

Worth mentioning: There is a big area in Rose Bowl parking lot #1 with free food & water for those who need it. Nothing official, just private citizens who showed up to help.

Our son and his partner have been living in Alhambra for a few years now, they are safe and are lucky that the Eaton fire has stayed a bit North of them.

His Partner's parents and siblings have a home in the foothills of Pasadena and got evacuation orders a couple days ago, so they moved in for the time being.
Thankfully last they knew their house is OK.

Seeing the scope of devastation I'm soooo thankful they are OK and situated a few miles from the fire, I've been on the phone with them a couple times a day since the winds kicked in... I sure felt helpless being this far away, but I know Aaron and Maria are cautious and would have bugged out with their dogs if necessary.

One of the side trips we took last year while visiting was a hike up into the Eaton canyon.
I get chills now knowing that area is completely burned.

Eaton canyon hike April of last year:

Aaron, Maria and Charlie the grand-dog

This brings back memories of Lahaina, it's going to be a very long time before anything in those areas seem "normal"

If any of the LA fires were intentionally set I too hope the perpetrators are either caught and jailed for a good long time or they perished in the nightmare they created.

Altadena is beautiful. So is Pasadena, LaCanada Flintridge, Montrose, Mt. Washington, South Pasadena...the whole NE quadrant of LA is almost all beautiful. Only the nice places burn...you'll never see a wildfire on skid row downtown or in some ugly, flat subdivision in the valley.

I have been sickened by the folks on social media platforms sharing stupid, politically slandering memes at a time like this. It is really a sad statement of what our society has become.

Best wishes to all you guys in SoCal, stay safe and you folks are all in my thoughts.

She will be fine. I am up in the hills near there. All of the brush and pine needles blown around stacked pretty high on the side of all the canyon roads. Thankfully no fire.

I was just up hiking in that exactly trail just this past Sunday. Full of trees, shady and a beautiful day only to find Red Flag Day that evening. Where we live, the street are super narrow and windy and parking is allow on only one side of the street, so fire trucks can get through. When the Santa Ana kicks up, we aren't allow to park there.

Alhambra will be safe and no fire. That's 4 fwy exits from us, and we are there in So Pasadena and Alhambra often.

I spent so much time in the mountains there. Did a ton of fishing in the Angeles and San Bernadino Nat Forests. Helped found a group called FRVC https://frvc.org/ in early 1990s, I remember writing the first Volunteer Handbook. Me and and my wife wearing the Forest Service gear, hiking the streams, pulling out bags of trash. Damn we were fit then. I've been scrolling around Google Maps looking for my old fishing place.

It's funny because even though I'm in the Palisades all the time and constantly blown away by the natural beauty and views, I rarely try to photograph it because my iPhone just won't fully capture what I'm seeing and also because, "it will always be there," so I don't need a photo to reminisce.

So much for that.

I dug through my phone to find the few photos I've taken lately, this is what was lost, a tiny slice visible in each photo:

These are ones I took of my Scirocco when I was getting ready to sell it, this was in Temescal Canyon with Pali High in the BG...all gone now:

I understand forest fires and "cities lost in the woods" getting burned down, but used to think "city fires" were a thing of the past with modern codes.. After Santa rosa and this... nope. What I am getting out of this is that there is not that much you can do, in an earthquake area where homes are made of popsicle sticks and wood and shingle roofs.. The videos of gusts of 80+ mph winds turning trees into flamethrowers, spreading ambers all over - not much you can do against that if your neighbor is flammable and his wall is 10 ft from your wall. We've trimmed trees, local FD made us remove all vegetation that contains oil that burn well, but it appears it's a bit "luck of the draw" also - if it starts near you and the wind blows at 80 mph your way, apparently even if you build a bunker, you are F$%$ed !

I was gonna ask on this thread what you can do reasonably, what can be learned, but sounds like this kind of unique combo of dry land/incredible winds are hard to defend from - notice how entire neighborhoods are gone without a single "survivor" in the middle... I sure miss my FL Block home that we traded for this papier-maché and popsicle stick CA home!!! (although that possibly flooded a few months back)

The wooden steps in the last photo lead up to the Palisades Women's Club, which had been there for over 100 years. I attended a good friend's memorial service there recently and plenty of aa meetings over the years. All just gone, gone, gone...going to be a lot of tears when they finally let people back in the area.

In the Angeles, a lot on East Fork. In San Berdoo, a lot on Deep and Bear Creek. Mountain biking in the Verdugo Hills. Hiking and camping, skiing. That area is amazing.

Do you actually miss living in Fla.?? They have plenty of their own disasters there and it's a swamp. To each their own. Everyone here knows by now how much I love my state and defend it, there are other beautiful places in the country and the world but CA. is unique and remains a magnet for anyone who can make it work and live here. It's not just PA. or New Jersey with "better weather"

Here are a few shots of Altadena, (possibly South Pas as well), including Thanksgiving a year ago in AD:

Not at all.. Well sometimes, but not often... What I miss is my 4000Sqft block home with real tiles on the roof anb a 5 car garage, which cost exactly 1/2 as much as my current 2000 Sqft popsicle stick california place ;-) But yeah, the weather, topography and diversity of everything in CA is much appreciated. Sucks we can't build blocks here though.
