In the Air Force we have a saying “I’d deploy with that guy.” Essentially I trust this person with my life.
Paul epitomizes the values and principles we look for in a leader and a friend. He has made, and continues to make his mark here on Pelican (and elsewhere.) I can speak for EVERYONE on this board when I say “I’d deploy with that guy.” We love you!

Dang, I'm just now seeing this. I've been absent for a bit since the new year due to several things, including the loss of a dear family member.
Absolutely gutted to hear about Paul. We had plans to meet when I lived in Virginia at my local Cars and Coffee but for whatever reason it never happened. I've enjoyed his commentary on this and the other board as well as sharing like minded military background and perspective. Best wishes and prayers.

I don’t know Paul personally, but over time, through his posts and our many back-and-forth exchanges, I feel like I got to know the kind of man he is.
Even though we often disagreed, it’s never felt personal. Paul listens, responds thoughtfully, and never crosses the line. That’s rare, especially these days. I may not share his views, but I genuinely respect the way he stands by them. Paul reminds us that you can strongly disagree with someone and still see the good in them. And he is a good man (my highest praise). I’m grateful for the conversations we’ve had over the years. Paul, you will be in my prayers and thoughts, and maybe, this time I can avoid being admonished by my favorite moderator. And since this seems to be the place for it - Neffi is just settling down for some serious ear scratches...

@gsxrken, I don't know of anyone here that handled words as well as he. There ARE many here that write very well, some quite unique (you know the ones), but Paul had depth that went beyond the words.
I've only been banned once (and it was Paul), not for attacking anyone or any blatant infraction, I was banned for violating a rule that I helped write, that one being the discussion of mods. And he called me on it and dropped me on ban island all the while being a perfect gentleman with fair conviction. But to say Paul didn't have some swings would not be accurate. I think he was truly fed up with me and used my rule against me. There was restrained disgruntlement followed up with, get this: inquiring if he fully held up his end on a matter or two between us. Not a hint of retribution. The man was much larger that that. I can't say the same for me. Yeah, Ken, you pulled up a great set of posts that spoke truly of him. I hope he’s well enough to read all of this. If someone has to leave, they should do so knowing they made a difference. Not singularly profound, but perhaps the most meaningful accomplishments we can achieve in our time here. I’m sure his family recognizes the place he holds at the head of their table. He took the lead guiding rafts and he took the lead in guiding aircraft in war. Then he further took the lead in commanding respect. There aren't very many of these type of men. We may have known that all along but as a mod he brought it full face.

Very well said, Milt. I'm still hoping to get a positive update. That would be a real relief for all of us.

Paul, can't do much for you except think of you while visiting friends who are going through troubles. Here's a couple more critter pics.

I wish Paul well too, but my fear is he's going thru a hell few of us should ever wish on an enemy. It sounded like he got sepsis IMO from what was described in the first post of this thread. I could be wrong and truly hope I am, based on what my brother experienced with his bout of it. It is not a way to go out one would chose if given the choice.
I'm reminded of the day I went into work early and logged onto the 912 bbs. I was one of the first to see the post about Dave Hillman passing from a motorcycle accident. It left me with an empty feeling that still exists to some extent. Paul is in the fight of his life right now. I will miss his civility, candor and pictures of his farm. I wish his family all the best. Yes, I'm having a hard time dealing with this. This place won't be nearly as much fun if he doesn't come back.

Scott, me too, having fought sepsis from a burst diverticula...emergency surgery. The pain is definitely a 10 out of 10...dulled, but not killed by opioids as the latest and greatest of various antibiotics are dripped into your veins...I was among the lucky. Praying Paul will be as well, while being fully aware of how touch & go this is...

Wow, just wow. That news is a bummer.
Please tell Paul I said... " From one Old Salt, to another Older, Crustier Salt, we're all puling for you!" Many prayers of Strength and Focus to beat this crap. Oh, and much Love! Tons and tons of Love to the whole family!

Guys like Ken and Zeke have written what I felt, but could not put into words. I have found myself saying a prayer several times a day, for Paul to get well, and to give his family courage and strength, during this trying time. I’m only a couple years younger than Paul, but reading his posts in general, of family, his military service, pictures of the farm, etc. I see a man that has done well with his life, and has passed it on to his son, daughter, and us here. And if I’m honest, I feel a twinge of jealousy.
I continue to have him in my thoughts and my prayers for a full recovery! |

I've been away for a few weeks and came back to this news.
I'm less than an hour from where Paul is, and we had discussed meeting up and going to a horse race. I've never been, and Paul offered to help me have that experience. Of course, there was the bonus of putting a face with all the posts. He has always been remarkably kind. To Paul and the family: Prayers are being sent your way. I'm just a short drive away, so if you need anything, please let me know.
