Why don't modern ships have lightweight outriggers?
-Retractable for high speed travel.
-Attached to linear gererator to create electricity when parked.
-A slide barrier fabric net for torpedoes/waterline cruise objects.

Even set me up for a carrier landing and was able to trap successfully. The two instructor pilots were screwing with each other by challenging themselves to the most jacked up scenarios possible. Very impressive to see a successful capture in a gail force low vis thunderstorm, one engine, failed instruments and control issues along with a pitching and rolling deck. Now I'm not a Navy guy but long ago a Navy pilot said that a carrier landing is like trying to lick a postage stamp in the middle of your living room , in the dark as you get a running start and then jump trying to hit it with your tongue.

I tip my hat to all of you carrier guys n gals
A good two part PBS story on pitching decks.

I saw these land on the back of a Missile Cruiser with a pitching deck like this one. The pilot matched the up and down motion of the ship as well as the pitching motion flying 20-30 feet above the deck. Once they were in sync the pilot would plop down during the down motion of the boat. You can see to the left of the helicopter is a small protrusion sticking out of the deck with windows. A pilot will be stationed inside helping to guide the helo to the deck. There is also a flight control officer in a small tower above the hanger deck directing the landing. Even with that help it still must take some big brass ones to land!

Pic taken today at a new project I will be doing. Brought in 3 Queen Palms to provide some canopy. Already tore out some stuff out of view and trimmed up some others we are keeping. Still have a ways to go before actually planting anything - have to wait for my herbicide to kill all the nasty Bermudagrass first. Got a taller Queen just for the corner of the house...the others are about the same height. Loose triangular spacing & odd numbers always work well for Queens.

These are in 30 gal. pots and have very stout trunks all things considered. Normally I use field grown but was able to get these so won't have any transplant shock.
