Covid Father's Day: My lovely bride said she go anywhere I wanted - even the places she'd typically not be that into...
So I'd been wanting to take a Atlas-Obscura-inspired drive up and around the nearby San Andreas Fault. It runs just a dozen or so mile northeast of our home, and for years I'd been wanting to go exploring up there. The "Devil's Punchbowl" - another interesting outcropping of the seismic activity in the area. Also a great hike! Evidence of the San Andreas and it's terra-forming! The California Aqueduct - yes, it carries its life-giving elixir across the San Andreas many times... I'd heard of Lost Lake most of my life, but had never been there. It takes a bit of orr-road trails to get there, and I was rather excited to see it. Technically it's not a lake but a "sag pond", a "body of water that has collected in a depression formed between the two sides of an active strike-slip fault zone. They are usually small and narrow, and lay lengthwise directly over the fault. Lost Lake is supposedly “bottomless” and fed from deep underground springs that rise up through the fault. During wildfire season, it's sometimes used as a water source for water-dropping helicopters, and locals claim it's never been able to be drained. My beautiful bride, great hiker and always a trooper, was more than just a little amused when she finally saw the great lake I'd been talking about for years... lol

Nice shots David of San Andreas and beyond, thanks for sharing the adventure!
Um, Byron, are they injecting or removing fluid? Shoot! I'm probably due for a refill. My Nephew's eldest daughter is out here visiting from Maryland, PNW weather delivered it's best midsummer effort- Cool, cloudy and while we were out getting a few miles in on the beach we watched a fog bank grow, recede and them come on by for a visit. Much Forting around, Ft. Ebey, Ft. Casey to be precise. Lighting was sooo flat I resorted to solarizing a few photos via Photoshop ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() My lovely wife and Niece out rock hunting... I did not take a rucksack for fear of those two filling it for me ![]() ![]()

Great pics Daepp. When I was flying out of San Diego we would fly the SA Fault in the remote sections. Easy to see from the air, looked like a scar..
Nothing earth shattering from me (see what I did there). My son got home yesterday with his girlfriend. He and I spent the past few hours mending horse fences, headed back out soon. Not a bad day for August in Maryland. He is an avid bow hunter and set up shop in the back yard. His deer target is leaning against the tree. His groupings, starting close and getting out to 30 yards, were amazing. ![]() For you sharp-eyed folks, mowing is the feature event tomorrow ![]()

Back out in the marsh today and hooked probably the largest red fish (spot tail) I’ve ever hooked. Fought him for about 10 minutes as he kept taking line and finally just as he got to the surface, flopping around, a 12 foot alligator appeared right next to him. Scared the heck out of me…this is salt water…gators generally stay in fresh water. I let the fish take line and go to the bottom and I moved back from the edge of the creek. I waited about 10 minutes (fish was too tired to fight at that point) and tried to bring him in again but Mr Gator reappeared. Finally decided to get fishy to the surface and flip him up into the air and onto solid ground. He was too heavy and landed at the bottom of the bank and Mr Gator had lunch. I thought fishing was supposed to be relaxing!
