for those that are wondering what all this is about.. or even care. Here's the origional post.
1985 Carerra, 3.2 motor, runs smoothly at idle and light load. Accelerating hard sluggish at 2500 - 3000 RPM, then at 5200 starts to back fire and the tach starts to fall off... if you stay in it, speed holds but tach continues to drop. If cold runs fine in tests to isolate the problem. Once on temp, problems. Changed the plugs and plug ends with no change. Took out an aftermarket O2 system and replaced with an origional O2 sensors in a test pipe. Swapped out the coil, mass meter, speed sensors again with no change. Didn't have an ECU to swap, plan on checking fuel pressure when I get home from this trip. Anyone had similar problems or know of some where to research this problem. Any suggestions will help. Thanks, Mike

I am definitely not an expert but, with your comment about failing at temperature, I would check the cylinder head temperature sensor. There are many posts on this and many who have forgotten more than I know about this.

For me anyway, the title of the thread and time it's posted has a lot to do with how many responses I get. Once it falls off the front page your odds go way down.
There also is an amazing feature called a "bump". If you reply to your ignored post it will bring it to the top of the board for all to see again, often creating a frenzy of posting activity

Thanks for the temp sensor suggestion, I'll check that one too.

I never saw your original post so we must assume others (more knowledgeable than I) didn't either. Also, the problem you describe could be caused by so many factors a concise fix probably isn't possible (i.e. no "silver bullet").
Causes of poor running at operating temperature/under acceleration can be caused by (in no particular order) low fuel pressure, air temp. sensor, engine temp. sensor, TPS (thottle position switch), air flow meter, speed and reference sensors, DME control unit, DME relay (maybe other factors, I'm just trying to give an over-view). Any of the above items may be failing or merely have a poor connection. The DME (like all electronic controls) needs very good, solid voltage and connections to function properly (something as simple as a marginal battery/charging system can affect it's operation). The best procedure would be to run the test procedures for the above systems (I can't advise, I don't have the 3.2 manual). Good luck, Jerry M '78 SC |

I have also heard of a miss at higher RPM's with worn plug wires - it was a while back - plug wires were changed - and the miss and stumbling went away. This was on a 3.2 Carrera - which I tend to read more of...
Now - let's have a group hug!

My vote is the head temp. sensor, if it's original. There is an upgrade for this, which has two wires. You're gonna really enjoy this job, though it's not expensive. I think the old sensors go bad and cause the engine to run rich under load, which may cause your miss.

I have seen a 3.2 with a high RPM stumble which was attributed to a bad airflow meter. If you can find one to try it's an easy check. Good luck.

Did anyone mention fuel filter?
JagPilot, don't worry. Yes, you were a little terse and you can expect some flaming. You make a point and it was well answered. BBS's are far from perfect, but this one is the classiest of them all. When I get in trouble around here, I just let it disappear by not responding. Which I've had to do a few times.

I'm with Milt; fuel filter may be causing the high speed stumble. On my 2.7 I had this problem and it may have been associated with a plugged injector.
