OK, I promise to leave this thread alone after this, but I have to share a racist dog story.

In my area there is a huge amount of construction litigation over houses that weren't built well, causing them to rot from the inside out. When the suit gets served, all of us usual suspects and our expert witnesses get dragged out to inspect the house.

One of the most respected and often used engineering experts is black. A great guy and good engineer, by the way. He's been attacked by dogs on inspections more often than you can count. No one else I know has even been nipped. I can't explain it, but it's true. The dogs only go after him.

Back in the 60s"black english" began catching on where I grew up as a "separate but equal" endeavor. The black community , well at least the kids, wanted to be able to speak in their own dialect as a protest against white society. As such its ,at best poorly spoken english, at worst its...well...poorly spoken english.
And if you show up at my office for an interview speakingthat way, you don't get in. You can code switch on your own time. not on mine.

I don't think it is racist to express concern that (as far as television is concerned and therefore the minds of a whole generation) the American pop culture export is causing elements of society to go down the toilet.

There is nothing wrong w/ slang, as long as it is not the only way that you know how to speak. Black slang, working-class white slang from various regions, etc.., it adds to the richness of the language and culture but it is extremely important for kids to be taught and become fluent in standard english if they ever hope to amount to anything in the world.

You might be amazed, (or not), at how many rap icon/celebrities are actually very intelligent and/or well educated and speak flawless english when the situation dictates.

When we pay farmers to NOT grow soybeans, they don't grow them with furious enthusiasm and efficiency. In the same way, our government has directly subsidized illegitimacy. Poor people have responded in a predictable and sophisticated manner to our goverment's fiscal encouragement...they make babies. And not just any babies, they make illegitimate babies. The kind the goverment pays for! If a young married woman seeks public assistance, the benefits are limited. If, however she is unmarried and cannot identify the father of her children she may qualify for free housing, healthcare, food and assorted financial benefits. In truth, a teenage mother of three will be legally emancipated and will have achieved the same financial status as her mother.

In many inner city families, the father has become obsolete. There is no social pressure to marry, or to support ones children. We have fostered a culture of poverty and hopelessness. Is it any surprise that the hip hop movement has found an audience? It's an affirmation of sloth, addiction, and sexual expression without consequence.

Also, it might be easier for American's to say "this is black culture". But Im not sure the ROW is in a position to draw that distinction. It looks like "American culture".
