News Flash - Democratic Candidates will raise taxes!
News at 11!
Obama wants to do the universal health care thing and says he will tax "the rich" to pay for it. http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/05/29/obama.health.ap/index.html Oh, and everyone who has health care, it will be no different than today, except it will cost less. Yeah, right. Can these people really believe what they are saying?

Compare and contrast your view and their view of "rich"...

They say "the rich" is $250K/year, I read in Pelican OT in California, that would barely be a "decent" living. ($100K is poverty in Cal, can't even be considered "decent" income).

Guess what; you're already paying for a significant part of the universal health insurance you despise just with the added costs of private insurance overhead (~30% - there's a lot of forms to fill out and process and insurance co. profits to pay), deferred preventive care, the inefficient use of emergency room resources and other unneeded costs. The poor do not keep their sickness to themselves; read up on the influenza outbreak of WWI. Public health is a public issue.

Today the federal government is spending more than it is taking in. Has been for several years.
So the debt is rising. Unlike an individual, where the debt goes away when that person dies, this debt never goes away until it is paid off. At this point we are not paying our bills. We are passing the debt on to our children and grand children. If we don't get responsible about our debt, yes it is OUR debt, then we have left our children with this burden. I personally find this behavior disgusting and irresponsible.

We're already paying for housing and clothing for the poor as well. Should we just build them all homes and give them Macy's cards too?

No. I draw the line at Macy's cards. Pennys and Sears cards should be adequate.

From the article:
Quote:
Two or three states already have their own "health insurance plans", and as I understand it these could still exist. You could always opp-out and pay another plan/company of your choice in Vermont where the state acts more as a regulator than an administrator. |

We will ALWAYS have people who will not get their own health insurance. We have two choices: 1) Let them deal with the consequences of their own actions. 2) Force taxpayer-funded "universal" coverage upon them. Being the personal responsibility advocate that I am, option #1 seems the most appealing to me.

Think hard about that, Chris. A poor family who simply, at this time, cannot possibly afford health insurance. A child gets gravely ill. The father watches his four year-old son die because he cannot afford the medical cost of saving his life. There is a reason, Chris, why society elects to provide basic medical services to everyone.
Of course, you'll probably come back with some remark about how basic services make some sense. That children should not die for want of an antibiotic prescription. If you do, that's different from Option 1 above and in this case, you're paying for those services. Paying through the NOSE. A typical emergency room service runs probably $1,000. More, maybe. Some of you guys are not going to understand this, but universal health care is something you WILL pay for. It's just a question of how it's structured. Making people achieve financial security as a condition of accessing health care sounds like a cute idea......as long as you don't think about it very hard.

I had an old economics professor (who worked in the Kennedy admin) who had a pretty simple plan for welfare. He said the current system did not encourage working since if you earned even a little income you lost all your welfare benefits. His plan was to have a set minimum government paid income, say $10K. If you earned $1000, you only received $9.5K from the govt. If you earned $5K, you only received $7.5K from the govt. Once you earned $20K a year, you received no more welfare money. This would encourage folks to get out and work, but still provide a minimum welfare for the folks that just won't or can't work.
