bought a scissor lift today

After many years of useing car jacks, ramps etc. I finally decided to start looking for a used lift. I couldn't justify buying new but a good used one was within budget Recently on Craigslist I found one for sale and sent the guy an email. He provided the data that he had. It's a 7-8 year old Ammco lift, it has two hydraulic cylinders, runs on 110 volt and lift to 48 inches. He purchased it from the original owner who had two twin post lifts and this scissor. Supposedly it was used mostly for ATV's so minimal weight. The original price was $2,000.00 The guy I bought it from is into ATV's and midget and sprint cars so again minimal weight vehicles. He was selling because he needed the room. I got it for $800.00 which I think is a great price for what appears to be a excellent quality unit. They are manufactured in Tenn. so parts should be available if needed. I snapped a few pics while it's sitting on my utility trailer, I was really surprised how well my utility trailer handled this beast I can't wait to get this setup and get my 914/6 conversion up in the air.

Please post pics when you have it up in the air (with a car on it). Would like to see the amount of room/access available to do "under-car" projects. I'm still up in the air (no pun intended) on a scissors lift vs. a two-poster.

That's almost like mine. I think mine was called Hammeco or something similar. And it cost only $1045 brand spanking new. That's like $1/pound.

Here's photos of what it will look like in action....I never put it all the way up since I'll hit the garage door opener. BTW, you need the extra weight of the tank on to move that best around your garage.

So do they limit access to the (critical) parts of the underside? Can you reach most of the engine/tranny and front suspension?

On the 911, I did a full suspension refresh. On the 944, mostly just maintenance (I bought it too late to do the engine swap). I just did the clutch cable on my 911 ... that was probably the most challenging (needed to get the cable into the firewall in the rear). I think the real challenge was in the fact that the trans carriers was in the way more than the lift. It's pretty versatile, I've had my 3 series sedan up there as well. I haven't really run into anything I couldn't do.

I believe for a 911 or 914 this type of lift should work great as there really isn't too much to service in the center of the car. Basically from the rear of the front fender to the firewall not much to work on vs. a car with a front engine/rear drive with that tranny layout, driveshaft etc. I'm thinking that by doing a little " positioning " of the car and the adjustable lift arms I'll come up with good balance on either car AND have room to do engine install on the 914. Time will tell.

FWIW, I have pulled transmissions, exhausts and clutches on my watercooled p-cars without any issues what-so-ever with my BendPak scissor lift (looks to be identical to your new lift). My lift came with three sets of lift pads. I rarely use the tallest set, but coupled with the open area in the center of the lift and the gap at the front of the lift, I have yet to ever come across an area I could not easily work on ANY of my vehicles in my signature below.

The god d@mn f#CK!^@ Audi broke on us again last night and as you can see, even with the all wheel drive, twin exhausts etc, it is easily serviced on this lift.

After doing a 993 oil change on VASteve's lift, I would never ever own one of these things. I'd rather do it on the ground or with a full-height lift. All or nothing. Three feet off the groud was just enough to be uncomfortable the whole time and make it very hard to reach stuff.

Huh .... I use mine for everything and enjoy working while sitting on a small stool with wheels.

To each their own I guess, but I can't imagine life without mine

Try a 993 oil change on one of these. All the work is done under the car, which is totally different than on earlier 911's. The small filter is almost impossible to reach (especially once it's loose and then covered in leaking oil) unless you're on your back or standing up with the car all the way up. 3' off the ground makes it impossible to reach by laying on your back and incredibly uncomfortable to reach while squatting.

here it is in use

I finally got the lift off the trailer and into position. I rolled the 914 over the lift, adjusted the lift arms, positioned some hockey pucks and voila she's in the air. The pics are at full 48 inch lift. Quite stable at that height. I'm a happy camper

I can do it blindfolded in no time in my driveway or on a full-size lift too.
