If you read the interview with Neil about that performance you posted above, he was very upset about it. He said he hadn't gotten to practice more than a few min. with the rest of the band before they all had to go to other gigs for the night and then on show night, he couldn't hear them at all. He's kind of a cranky guy anyway and he pulled it off. But I think he's only gotten better in the 20 yrs. since that Buddy Rich concert.

Lots of my favourite players are real 'less is more' kinda guys. Ed Thigpen for example: a jazz genius. Peterson's 'Night Train' is just the best.

You would expect a nice bass player to work with nice drummers, and Sting has had some good ones. Drummers playing old Police songs are my favourites. Good old Stewart, solid as a rock and still an inspiration all these years later, then Omar, then Vinne - Vinnie had me in tears of joy at the Albert Hall in '96, his playing is epic. Met them all backstage afterwards, I was awestruck, totally speechless (not to mention hoarse). Here's Omar being interesting on 'Burn for You':

one bit of advice i got early on, was one that took me a while to figure out.

"learn how to play drums like a black man plays drums and everything else after that will become easy."

hadnt a clue what it meant when first spoken. and when i asked what it meant, i was told to look at a new orleans jazz bands drummer. so i did. and still hadnt a clue and focused on their beat. i got hooked on that and steel drums early on. steel drums dont get any more basic.

when i finally figured it out it was like a light bulb had gone off.

wondering what the answer is? scratching yer head?

well think about it for a moment................9/10 black jazz drummers 50 years ago hadnt 2 nickels to rub together. their kits were comprised SOLELY of a snare, a hi-hat, and a kick bass. cymbals were a luxury, and any other drum mounted on the bass or on the floor was a very slow evolution.

so since they only had a hi-hat and a snare and the bass beat with their foot, they became damn proficient at making many different sounds come from what little they had.

so your basics are the root of all and everything else is just what is added. which has obviously spawned mega keith moon/pert/bonham size drum sets.

if you go back and watch older drummers you will see what im saying. little but the basics but an incredible array of sound coming from so little.

'Sorry for bringing back a dead thread, but I happened to think of Missing Persons recently that make me think of Terry Bozzio

Most recently of Korn for you youngsters...

But Terry is most like better known to us older guys from his days with Frank Zappa...

But then who can forget Missing Persons?

I saw Terry play with Jeff Beck when he opened from Stevie Ray back in 1989.

Been playing since I was seven. Danny is one of my top flight drummers. Very innovative and powerful.

There are scores of amazing drummers out there, it's hard to pick a favorite or who's the "best". I usually dig on different drummers for whatever mood Im in or listening to alot at that time.

Right now it's Danny Carey, Tomas Haake and Josh Freese.

U.S. Drag was one song that I forced myself to learn by Terry Bozzio. Never played it out but more of a personal triumph.

What's even more funny is that I can still play almost beat for beat on the steering wheel/dashboard/flat surface any Rush song played on the radio from Moving Pictures.

One song that still gives me chills is "Old Days" by Chicago. I can remember playing along with that album when I was just starting out. The hihat"scoops" are iconic for Danny Seraphine.

Sweet.

Bad Pun Alert:

"So many drummers, so little time"....

But so many good choices on this thread. May I respectfully add David Garibaldi.

What would you expect from a bass player anyway? Drummer jokes of course.

Although personally I've always been intrigued by 3 over 2 rather then 3 + 2.

But of course, what would you expect from us "bottom-feeders"?

I recently purchased a DW9000, I've had it for a couple weeks now and I'm loving it. Talk about smooth... it truly is a nice pedal.

Now listen to the current incarnation of the band (without Terry Kath, Danny and Peter Cetera). Their current drummer (I don't know his name) is very good and rock solid. He can play all of the notes required -- but where's the flow? The feel? the music??
My dad had their first couple of records so I grew up with them... I always liked Seraphine's drumming....they lost their soul when Terry Kath died, and lost their groove when they kicked Danny S. out of the group. I guess there were conflicts and Seraphine wanted a bigger voice in the band. Good drummer.
