Northrop X-4 Bantam

The X-4 was developed for the study of flight characteristics of swept wing semi-tailless aircraft at transonic speeds (about Mach .85). Northrop built two X-4s. The No. 1 aircraft was first flown by Northrop on Dec. 16, 1948, and the second X-4 made its initial flight on June 7, 1949.

The USAF/Northrop X-4 was an early X-plane designed to explore the flight characteristics of a swept-wing, tailless aircraft in transonic flight. It came into being as a result of recent Air Force studies which indicated that a tailless configuration might alleviate or eliminate instability issues associated with supersonic flight. The X-4’s external configuration was similar to that of the German Me163 Komet and the British De Havilland DH.108 Swallow.

But the latest twist in this still-shadowy tale comes in the form of an A-12 canopy appearing on eBay – and it looks like the real thing.............

Seth Kettleman, who owns the canopy, purchased it through GovDeals.com for $2,300. GovDeals told The DEW Line that the part had been listed by the aviation department of Purdue University in Indiana, where it had reportedly been stored for more than 15 years. Interestingly, no-one seems to know exactly how it got there.....................

Several A-12s were reportedly on the production line when the programme was cancelled, but their fate has remained a mystery. The eBay canopy is a tantalising clue that their parts may still exist, and shows that at least one component of the still classified A-12 is in private hands.
