Color me skeptical. I grew up around drag racing and have spent an awful lot of time around the strip. Even helped crew a nitro funny car that held the track record in Denver back in the late '80's. I think I know what it takes to dip into the 7's.

Here is a good friend's real, honest to God, authentic 7 second car. I've known Gene for darn near 40 years now, and have spent some time with this car. Notice some differences - how it launches, how it moves through the first couple hundred feet - this is where low E.T.'s are made. Check out the real drag slicks, and notice how much more rubber it puts on the ground than what is on this 'Vette. That, and Gene's car is all of 1,000 pounds lighter... on twice the rubber... with a very sophisticated, four link drag specific rear suspension hung under a very rigid race car frame/roll cage.

The real deal:

So, yeah - I want to see these guys do this at a sanctioned event, under the watchful eye of NHRA officials. Not that that will ever happen - they would never let a car with this potential run with such an abject lack of safety gear.

Sorry for the buzz killing skepticism. Just too much B.S. out on the web these days... I've become quite jaded.

You could be right Jeff. But I have been going to some drag races over the past 1 or 2 (after a 20+ year absence) and it's incredible what some of these cars are doing. Example, the Factory Stock FS/XX cars (no nitrous) are running low 8s, which really blows me away

You are absolutely right. Just because a car is street legal that does not make it a street car. It also will not pass tech at a NHRA event. It has a powerglide transmission not the 8 speed trans that it came with. That said, it is impressive engineering to do what it does. It gets down the track without big slicks because the power curve is controlled by adjusting timing and fuel in the cars computer. I have been to LS fest and seen some insanely fast street cars that look like grocery getters. One of my best friends has a C6 Vette that runs 10s and is a true street car.
Aint technology grand ??

Oh, I know, Curt, these things are just stunning by the standards we grew up with. Here was one of my favorites as a kid, the Sox and Martin Duster. I got to sit in it once... Anyway, 426 Hemi with two 1150 cfm Holley carbs on a tunnel ram manifold, camshaft with something like .700+ lift, 2,000 rpm "idle" - and it ran mid 9's at about 145 mph.

Yup. Say, you will notice Gene playing with some sort of an electronics box mounted to the front hoop of the cage at about 1:50. That is the programming box for his FAST engine management system. He has several fuel and ignition maps loaded into it. When racing, it's methanol and some outrageous advance, along with insane levels of boost (it has an adjustable wastegate separate from the FAST system). On the street - and it is licensed - it's pump gas, less advance, and less boost. Damn thing gets 20 mpg on the highway. No kidding.

The Radclyffe Cabriolet, as it is known in Volkswagen circles, obviously influenced Joseph Hebmüller II on his frequent trips to the Wolfsburg plant. The Type 14A, commonly known among VW enthusiasts as a "Heb",[1] took many elements of the Radclyffe Cabriolet his company would later build.
