I investigated a rental at first.
I ran this whole experience though my carrier, Allstate. My policy allows $15 a day for a rental. I don't know if I could have rented roller blades for that ![]() The at fault carrier, Farmer's, has been very quiet, not returning calls. They did pay my $500 deductable after I put the pressure on them. After leaving message after message without results, a little mention of reporting to an insurance watchdog agency got an immediate call back and the check in a few days. I told Allstate, 'no rental'. If I had a rental at something like $100 a day, it would have been tough to find the money to pay out of pocket and then the haggling just to get my money back. I went the simple route. My BIL is retired and it was no inconvenience to him at all. KT

What I don't understand is why the at fault insured's carrier isn't on the hook for an equivalent vehicle to you... immediately... and until your vehicle is repaired. I don't know what that portion of coverage is like here in SC... but overall, it doesn't seem like the insurance industry is doing its job if the one who was hit can't get an equivalent vehicle immediately and not be on the hook and at the mercy of the insurance company's willingness to return calls, etc. for reimbursement... that's just insanity, IMO. Does anyone see how this situation is right or fair? Is there some kind of "abuse" that this system protects the insurance industry from? Is this system designed to make the one who is waiting for his vehicle to be repaired be the one who pesters the repair shop? Sure seems like it. That should be the insurance company's job. IMO.

Getting my truck repaired took endless phone calls and extensive research of my vehicles current market value.
If I were to just 'go with the program', they would have totaled and given me some low value check and let me fend for myself. The last thing I needed was to get in a wreck and end up with payments again just to get into an equivalent vehicle. My truck has been paid off for 2 years and only has 100k miles! That holds big value today. Real value. Money is worthless right now. KT

I think it is very evident that insurance is the devil's work.
