Well, to be honest, I'd rather carry a Glock 35.

The Detonics is small (good) but also heavy (bad).

Unfortunately, I think all the micro-1911s are ammunition-sensitive to some degree.

Recoil springs are supposed to be replaced every 5000 rounds or so. After 50 rounds, you won't want to shoot a CombatMaster any more that day. So 5000 is a lot.

But it sure lets out a roar, and a nice big bullet.

Supe, I personally don't keep my Colt "cocked & locked" either, although I have no doubt it's perfectly save based upon Browning's design. I know some disagree, but I don't even keep a round chambered (nor do I ever carry, although I sometimes make sure it's handy if I'm going to be in certain scenarios). Still trying for that "last word" ...

Again, good luck on that last word thing.

I looked at the Springfield XD last night and was impressed. It has the safety features I like. It is, essentially, always cocked. That is, it has no external hammer. But.....it's a nice gun.

Depends if you have small hands or not. Paraordinance P12, steel frame will fill the bill, but if you have small hands it may be too much of a handful. I have it as well as a single stack 1911. I have large hands, so the double stack P12 isn't an issue. I have the SA 1911 on the nightstand.

I liked the .40 Springfield XD I shot, much more than a comparable Glock. They are nice guns and very well priced. Having choices for barrel length is a nice touch, as for anything other than carry I prefer a 5" barrel (like the 1911). An XD is on my short list when I buy another.

I'm not a large man (5'8" and 165 lbs) but mercifully I do have pretty good-sized hands and double-stacks feel just fine. I am more concerned about the weight than the grip-width. I definitely do NOT like the guns with shorty handles where my pinkie is hanging off the bottom of the grip.

I haven't made a final decision yet but this Springfield XD "service" model (4" barrel) is a front-runner.

The Glocks were okayyyyy, but I didn't get the sense they are real high quality. I could look between the slide and the gun body and see daylight. I'm guessing Glocks are good quality, so perhaps I will have another look at them.

The grip angle of the Springfield XD is the same as that of the 1911 and is said to be the "most natural" in aiming a pistol, there are quite a few advocates of this grip angle. The grip angle on Glock pistols is a bit wider. Best to see which you're most comfortable with.

I had the pleasure of delivering a table (estate sale) to a retired LEO yesterday, and he was showing me a few of his 70+ firearms and reliving his vivid memories. He's had a stroke, and the short story is, last Sat. when I met him, I discovered he was my cousin's deceased (cancer) LEO husband's partner back in '73 and was standing right beside him when his other LEO best friend "stupidly" accidently shot him right through the stomach with a 9mm at the courthouse (he was VERY lucky to survive) and I heard the "real" story for the first time... but I digress, sorry. Anyways, one of the pistols he showed me was his old service Glock .45, and I didn't like it nearly as much as some of his others nor my own. It just didn't feel like a "quality piece" though I have no doubt it probably is...different strokes.

Still working on that last word thing, eh? My sense is that almost any other chat group would be better than these pushy Pelicanheads. Present company excepted, of course.

Yeah, that's been my sense with Glocks also. They're probably fine.

Thanks for the added input, Joey. Thanks everyone. The data is stored.
