Okay Dave, next time you are looking for a project let me know. I'll commission you to build me a tube preamp.

Morning folks.

Another busy day for me. I am finishing up the 1000 square ft printing job. It will be nice to have it finished.

Hey D, I may have to break down and replace my antique home computer. I put it together close to 10 years ago. I remember the first hard drive I put in it was a 4 gig drive that I thought was huge. The motherboard will only accept 2 gigs of ram.

Right now I have a 1 TB mirrored raid as my boot drive. I did not need that much space but it was actually cheaper than a pair 500 gig drives at the time.

Now the video card is dying.

I want to go with Win7 Pro, 8 gigs of ram and a mirrored raid boot drive again. Something that can be eaisly cloned and moved to a new drive in 5 or six years. I hate had drive failures so I just replace the drive every few years.

I have a 27 inch monitor that has a very high resolution so a good video card is necessaary. I don't play video games so I don't need a game machine.

I have put it off for a long time because of the pain of setting up a new computer system and loading a lot of new software.

Any reccomendations?

glen, it comes down to how much you want to spend. if you want, you can keep your current drives, unless you planning on keeping the original machine as a backup (which is a good idea, actually).

i usually build my machines from parts that i pick out. however, newegg.com has some nice stuff that is reasonably priced. i do think that you might want to build your own, however, as buying a machine with mirrored drives and Win7Pro is going to require the purchase of a 'workstation' which will have the 'workstation' premium attached to it.

if you'd like, i can make a 'wishlist' on newegg for a complete PC and you can take a look at it. again, if you give me an idea of how much you want to spend and what you expect to be included (monitor, printer, keyboard, mouse, whatever) and anything you must have (a certain style of mouse or color, for example), i can put together a build list for you to peruse.

I don't want a new monitor. It is less than a year old and a nice Viewsonic 27 inch that fills up the space on the desktop. I don't need a printer either. I have a ancient HP laser jet 4 that works fine. It is B&W only but if I want color I come to work and print on our high dollar printer. I will probably need a printer port card because the printer only has the old style printer port. I am totally happy with my current trackball mouse, but I will get a new keyboard only because they are cheap and the old one is getting sticky keys. I bought a expansion card that runs my current raid boot drive.

A wishlist on Neweggg would be great. It has been years since I kept up with the hardware available. I want a motherboard by a main line company, not some super cheap POS glitchy motherboard. Been there done that.

I usually don't start off with a fixed budget in mind. I look at the performance vs quality and options and pick what is needed to a solid performance reliable machine that will last another 10 years.
