So when are you branching out to steering wheels?

I am planning to drop by TRE tomorrow. I'll see if they have any 924/944 shifters lying around. There is a 911 in the shop that has an aftermarket shifter (Wevo maybe). It has the wood shift knob, but the shifter seems to have a threaded hole in the center, so a threaded brass insert was epoxied in.Dave (TRE) and I still have to research other mounting options.

Watch for the updates.

I do like the way the new one looks. Having either the dark or the light bands noticeably smaller than their opposites seems more correct.

I just wish you could find pictures of the real 908/917 knobs. The only good pix on the web, are the copy. My pic from the museum didn't come out very well.

I can do that. We are looking into making some laminated interior trim pieces for the early 911's.

I am clearly not a communications major as I did not convey the last post as I intended.

I did not mean it to be so derogatory. I really don't know what they do. I was just saying that "communications" just sounds like that sort of thing and that can't be all they do in 4 years.

I think I might actually get along alright with art majors, surprizingly enough. My mom was an art major before switching to pharm school. Although I would not like to be graded on my art or my taste I do appreciate a lot of art and music (just not most rap/hip-hop).

I'm not a literary person, though. I can't read anything but non-fiction. If the words are presented in song format, then I like them, however.

So the discussion between me and Nuno about my picture was not enough for you?

Your pic is the only other I have found and oddly, the thin pieces are dark and the thick, light and has more layers.

Jeff Zwart has a coffee table book on the 917. It goes for $170 on the Road & Track website. I wanted one until I saw the price. OK, I still want one.

I still think that Porsche did not really care what the wood looked like so there could have been variation between the cars, and if the shift knob was replaced at some point there would be no guarantee it would be "correct" since they were just old race cars at some point.

I totally agree. It's just frustrating that there are not more examples out there. I have only seen the two real ones and that's not enough material to work with.

You could not get a good look at the 917 interiors, only the front. Signs on the floor about not walking around them. The pic I took looks very similar to the knob I posted tonight (wood aside).

The knob in the second to last pic is a copy (from the guy that made them before me).
