Fintstone, dont understand the traffic that is heading to DC every morning, it is so busy, we go up to DC occasionally to do tourist type stuff and the traffic is horrendous, people seem to drive from everywhere, some seem to be coming from around 2 hours drive to get to work. madness.

Back home I used to live about 2.5 miles from work, and usually walked. Here we live about 6 miles from Steve's work place so his commute is easy.

The travel must have a detrimental effect on your family and home life. You spend so much time travelling to and from work.

fintstone 02-26-2013 04:24 AM

If not for the commute...it is the easiest job I have ever had. I am working much less hours here...but the commute is just so painful. Especially in winter.

Just need to decide if I am going to stay or go. I have a really nice empty house out west that we could move back to...but no job there (would still do ok but leave a lot of money on the table). I hate to walk away from a high paying job...especially since I can retire in a couple of years.

As the tired saying goes, I feel your pain. If you only have a couple of years to go, I hope you can tough it out

Morning Y'all.

I am so glad that the DFRDB stayed at the 20 year mark. Never went to MSBS, as they were able to change the goal posts there for the poor bastards that went with the new super scheme. They can't start collecting their Defence superannuation until they are aged 60+, depending on when you were born.

Us we started collecting our super at 39 for hubby and 44 for me, 20 years after starting at Defence and after we retired from full time service, of course then we started doing other stuff and started new careers, hubby will get a good chunk from the public service super scheme when he retires in a few years. So hopefully we can afford to keep all the cars running!!

I was in the USAF (effectively) during GW1 when the MSBS/DFRDB debacle occurred. We got some bad info, and in the end got screwed there too. Mind you, I was planning to do 20 at that time too, so it really wasn't an issue then. 18 months later things went south for us, my DFRDB payout was a joke.

Meanwhile, we've done alright. Financially, we could retire at 55 and be very comfortable. Problem is I can't get at it all until I'm 65.......horse5hit.....

Morning all. Short day for me. Off at 3 for an appointment. Then new drummer to show up and drive the neighborhood nuts.

I am a retiree from the USAF...now working on a second career. CallEd back in the reserve and do a few weeks here and there too. I have enough to get by...but would leave a lot on the table.

Hi fellas, what's up? Been so darn busy lately, haven't been able to keep up. Things are only going to get busier with the job. I think they are finally going to start expecting something out of me. :) Love it though. The travel is weekly but has been only two to three days most of the time. Better compared to the week long trips I used to take. No home life at all. My boys were my life when I got home.

The rest of you look like you have been dealing with crap weather. In the 60's here. Love this time of year in AZ. Spring training and golf time. But cold enough where the mountains are still getting snow so I can go snowboarding if I want to.

Trying to get myself on a financial diet. Catching up when I was out of work and want to get it so that the only bill I have is my mortgage. And that, I want to pay off in five years. Then the fun starts. If my mom hasn't decided to hand me over the Green Grinch, I am gonna buy me a 911. Cash. I am tired of waiting and oogling at all of your cars!

I still do reserve stuff, last year I did 180 days or so, this year I have 120 days funded, have only done a few, but as soon as I get all the appropriate clearances will be working here for the Oz AF guys in Pax, part time.

Friend of mine's Dad did 20 in Air Force as pilot for brass, then another 20 as an administrator in local public school system. Combined retirement income is $80K per year.

Porsche-poor 02-26-2013 12:01 PM

Jferr006 02-26-2013 01:34 PM

She's alive! We've missed you, Doll!

I've been sick again and have a busy weekend out of town coming up!

This is the general strategy my wife and I adopted from the start of our marriage. Five years wasn't doable, but we did pay off the mortgage early.
