I have the feeling my old mate has not long to go before he checks out. We've had three trips to the vet in the last month. It started with his incontinence getting worse with blood evident. Two courses of antibiotics and the blood stopped. His general well being picked up. After several week and alls fine we noticed a few spots of blood here and there last weekend. Yesterday's visit to the vet and he decided to be fine. Last night he seemed a little flat and wasn't interested in eating. The vet also noted (again) that his gums were very pale, as if he is anaemic, and to keep an eye on it.
He's lost a lot of muscle mass in his rear end (not uncommon says the vet) over the past year. He can get himself up and about but it takes time, and now it's getting cooler its is getting more difficult for him. He wears a coat when he's outside these days. We've talked with the vet about letting him go when the time is right - I think it's coming sooner than later. :-( It's a bit sad to think about but it's been on my mind a bit. Sorry to dump this on you all but I think I needed to offload it. |

Thanks Jim. But after 14 years he's had a good innings, and we've got many great memories.
The hard part is going to be letting him go at the right time for him, without ourselves being selfish. I'm hoping he goes peacefully one night so we don't have to make that decision. |

Sorry to hear the bad news Jeff. I am not looking forward to the day my pup goes. It will be heartbreaking.

He's a bit of a bugger. One minute he's an old dog moping around, and the next it's all wagging tails, trotting, and smiley faces. He's not making it very easy for us.

Jeff, so sorry. We lost both of our fur children within 3 months of each other. We had to replace them with new fur children. It is a hard decision.

Morning all. It doesn't seem that long ago I was here last.
![]() Cheers guys, but I may be worrying about nothing. This morning, the old fella was up early waiting for me. I let both of 'em inside and they're both all waggly tailed smiley faced puppies. Served them breaky (of which he ate some and the young fella inhaled), then the old fella made himself comfy in the library on his inside pillow and watched me make my lunch in the kitchen (and gobbled the few tidbits that came his way). A completely different pup from last night? He may just kick on for a while yet. It just worries me to see him not himself more often than not. Maybe that's old age and what I've got to look forward to myself.

Evening Y'all.
I love my pets, and the hardest times are if that decision has to be made. They have always let me know when it;s time. The worst one was a tomcat we had, he was born in out basement and was the runt of the litter, his mama would always drop him on Beth's lap and go feed the litter then come tend to him. We had no choice but to keep him. He was the best cat we have ever had. Huge 20lb Sylvester cat with a heart of gold that I watched kill a rattle snake and a opossum. He howled like death itself the day his mom was killed by the fan in my Jeep. He had gotten very very old, dumped most of his weight and one day ran off for about a week. I knew he had gone off to dye alone in the woods. My son called me one morning and told me Bernie had come home but looked very bad. When I got home that evening Bernie was sleeping on the tile floor in the bathroom and was not doing well. I left him there and took a shower and when I had gotten out he had passed. It was almost like he was waiting to say good by to me. He was my constant shadow his whole life. That one was rough. ![]()
