I think my wife wanted an engineer. I wrote her a tender love poem for Valentine's day...
She balled it up (written on a big red construction paper heart) and told me: "only gay guys write poems." |

I used to have a great computer group of engineers that met at my old office. The guy that was the engineer of the year for AT&T three times back in the late 70s & 80s. Several engineers from Seagate technology. One guy could just about think in assembly language. This was back in the days of DOS 3 through 6. I was the only person there that still worked for a living. All these guys had retired and still played with computers.
Mostly I sat there and was amazed at the conversations. One guy was the retired head of the IT department for the FAA. He helped install and run the first mainframe for the FAA. I miss those guys.

They were all 65+ One was 75. And that was 15 years ago. They are the guys that invented a lot of the technology we use all the time today.
I was the puppy of the group. In the old days of DOS if you type dir the directory went flying past. Of course dir/p would do it page at a time but if the file was 10 pages down it took forever. One of the guys wrote a directory program that would let you scroll up or down. He was reluctant to share it because he said it was sloppy code and it was a 4K program. He said is should be just 2K. One of the group wrote the firmware code for the hard drives that he said that patent was licensed to almost all the other drive makers. Of course he made nothing of off it. He wrote it when he worked for Control Data. He designed the controller as well.

My experience is different. All the engineers I knew/currently know had kids.

He was there for a long time, I don't know when he retired but, he must have done ok...he had no kids and left a lot of college money alone to his sisters great-grandkids.

Morning everyone.
Previous job was more Chem. E. than this one. Mostly lab work here now though. I have been in the lab doing titrations all morning..... I hate titrations. -_-

Morning all. Hope everyone had a nice weekend and that our SoCal brothers and sisters are safe from the wildfires.
Fint, you should post one of your poems. All this Engineering talk this morning,,,,I'm inclined to start a poll among the brethren,, All those that played D&D respond with an "Aye". Oh how I hate reviewing VCRMs...

Back in the olden days (15 years ago) before digital photography changed the world most people used film to take a photo. I process a lot of film. We had precise QC that involved chemistry checks and processing a strip from Kodak that was a test. I had a chemistry set as a kid and I would have loved every second of the testing I had to do daily at work. The thrill was gone.
I tried over and over to teach other employees how to do it. The titration made their eyes glaze over. When I got to the densitometer and made readings and it took subtracting negative numbers they would run from the room.

In college a lot of people make the mistake of taking titrations way to far. Just the smallest, barely visible hint of color change and you are there. I now use a digital pH prob to hit my numbers exact. I always did find film processing fun also.
No D&D here either. First encounter with D&D was in college. I would take a nap between my fluid dynamics and differential equations classes in the club room which was located in the student union building. It was to far to walk back to the dorms, I would loose precious nap time doing that. There was a bunch of giberish and over excitement for an extra special group of people in the corner of the room. I looked at another classmate who did the same as me and asked... "WTF are they doing?" Response - D&D. Until then, I never knew what it was or that such a game existed. Baseball, wrestling and diving for me in high school and beer pong in college....haha.
