Engineer - No Comment. Hate doing documentation. Very typical extrovert.

RKDinOKC 06-03-2013 09:01 AM

Well, off to see if I get to go broke buying drugs or lose my foot.

Jim Richards 06-03-2013 09:05 AM

Good luck, Richard.

I probably blew two semesters of tuition in quarters, , HA! I used to be a Asteroids Ninja.

Made a reference to Asteroids the other day and my 18 yr old said "Huh?".

In D&D i was known as "The Cookie Jar Assassan":p

Engineers don't need anybody at work...they already know and can do everything them self.

Despite their self pronounced genius, they are socially inept and are ignored or ridiculed by women...and live at home with their mother and spend most of their time at Star Trek/War conventions or their mother's basement playing video games on the Internet and hacking into the Whopper (SAC Missile Defense Computer/Satellite System)

I admit I am socially inept, but I haven't played video games since I got my drivers license (at 16 of course). Never seen Dungeons and Dragons except in cartoons. I have only seen the original Star Wars and bits of episode 1. Don't watch Star Trek.

This makes it even harder. I am not geeky enough for the geeky engineers, not sporty enough for the jocks, not cool enough for the non-engineer ladies, which leaves me hanging out with Porsche people and talking with you lot on Pelican. ;)

LOL. I met a nice girl here who is very pretty and an engineer, but I realized she could be described as above in terms of looks and principles. (My mom is not an engineer, though).

Flieger 06-03-2013 11:24 AM

Janet, what is your degree in? Mechanical?

Did any of you engineers here do FSAE at your university?

Jferr006 06-03-2013 11:30 AM

My degree is in IT. I started in ME but, realized pretty quickly I didn't want to be an engineer. I really like design technology though, so thats what i do.
We had FSAE at ODU. I actually tried to join but, it was a real pain in the ass plus I was havign more fun going out and partying. ;)

Jim Richards 06-03-2013 11:33 AM

Didn't do FSAE. I had a real job while I was in school. No time to play.

Flieger 06-03-2013 11:35 AM

Doing FSAE this year has reinforced my love of engineering. I sort of wish I had started earlier, but it was a lot of work and everyone who is dedicated to the team ends up with a terrible GPA because they blow off classes. But I have learned so much more this year than in my classes. Actually trying to build the crazy crap I come up with has improved my design skills a lot.

The hours are usually very long, but I find that if I am away for more than a couple days I don't know what to do with myself. I need a big project like that. I like the feeling of accomplishment. It is nice to take a break and go hiking or biking on the weekends, though. :D

As a geezer I remember when Star Trek the original series came out. I loved it. I have always been into Science Fiction. Star Trek is not great Science fiction but it was all there was.

Every kid wanted a communicator and a phaser. It boggles my mind to think the flip phone has come and gone. Why have just a two way radio only? I can make video phones calls and all the other things a smart phone can do. A Star Trek communicator is outdated!

Everyone thought an automatic door was silly and would never happen. Now every store has automatic doors. They don't make the cool shoosh noise like in Star Trek, but they open automatically! And no one pays them any attention.

I'm the same way. Didn't do the game, other than the original Star Wars, didn't watch any others and don't do star trek. I am not geeky. I am very driven and always moving. Don't really play video games much other than here and there with friends. I was very social though, and also in a social fraternity in college. I am sporty but not enough to be a jock. First job out of college was a chemical engineering position but don't have that by degree (I worked with a few chemical engineers that weren't really good at the hands on stuff or what they were there for). I was straight Chem with a double minor in physics and math (only because I needed one more class in each due to requirements for my major.) Mother is a nurse and Father is a robotics engineer and a tool and die maker.

I guess there is only my passion for porsches and hanging out with this crazy crew also...lol.

When I used to read more as a littler kid I would always gravitate towards Jules Verne and HG Wells. I dug science fiction, but maybe only in that steam-punk way of cool mechanical stuff, not the warp drives and such.

The word Robotics was first used by my Favorite Author Issac Asimov back in 1941. I read every Science Fiction book at every school library that we moved to. Fortunately the base library had a better selection.

I went to a presentation for the SAE chapter here from a Cal Poly grad who went to work for the Lotus customer racing department in 1969. That was his first time out of the country (said he couldn't understand a word anyone said over there :)). He had some great stories, but his degree was in Industrial Technology since it was easier to get into than Mechanical Engineering. He said they used to call it IT for short but they can't anymore. :)

So, what's next for you Max now that you're graduating?

The real world, and a job most likely.
