Happy Damn Friday y'all. What a week, sigh. That's what I get for taking three weeks off I guess. I thought my new PM was going to hug me when I showed up on Monday.

The only T&Ters we had were the youngins that live across the street from us. Our street has zero lighting and even though we are in a highly residential area it gets wery dark. Last year we didn't have a one.

Had a new rear patio door with dual opening sidelights delivered on Wed. so I know what I'll be doing this weekend. We decided to go with Milgard's Essence series for the door and to replace all of our windows. From what I see of the patio door I'm going to be happy with the choice.

I have Milgard windows in my house. Had one pop as in moisture between the panes. Covered for life. They came out replaced the glass no problems.

Only if it is on an air cooled 911. It is right next to the water pump on my 911.

The El Camino has to have the engine raised a couple of inches to swap the pan. Not fun.

Ya... The 944 you have to support the engine from above, and drop the crossmember to get it... I got my uncle to help me weld up a brace last weekend to hang the motor from...

At least you get to use a lift to do a lot of the work.

Do you use the brace from the engine to shock towers or something?

Yup... I've borrowed a brace in the past, but didn't love it, and the way it set I was afraid it would damage the adjustment tabs on my konis...


Plan is to use a bad ass ratchet strap to pull tension, and then once we feel good about it, use a chain for backup in case the strap decides to give up. Thats all good heavy pipe, and the angles are such that gravity should help hold them in place nicely.

If i remember correctly, Lindsey Racing has a 3 piece cross member to make that job easier the next time.

When I replaced the timing chain on my old 305 AFTER I got everything back together a friend told me about a two piece timing chain cover that makes things easy. With the two piece chain cover you don't have to drop the pan. I figure I have another 200K miles before I have to worry about it again. With the 322,000 it has now I will make a note to do the timing chain at 500,000 miles. That will take another 16 years or so. Wow, 2029! I may just hire that done.

Rick are you available in Summer 2029?

The next time you have to do it just remember all the work you could have saved for $315 bucks back in 2013. I wonder if there is a local pickup cash discount available.

I'm not too fond of the design really. I feel that if zee germans thought it needed to be one piece, who are we to argue with them? And this isn't a track car, I've got no desire to be swapping the gasket in just a few hours.

Did NOT put it on my 944 Turbo when the motor was rebuilt by Lindsey Racing. Didn't plan to remove the motor again for a very long time. And as it turned out, no one will be as the car got parted by the guy I sold it to.

When I rebuilt the GTS after the cam gear broke off I didn't replace the stock timing belt tensioner with an aftermarket that doesn't require re-tensioning. Didn't replace it because the aftermarket one also got rid of the timing belt tension warning sensor. If anyone had trusted the warning system and tried to find why the warning was going off we would have found the gear hub cracked and been able to replace it before the cam broke preventing the cam end from breaking off. So I stuck with the stock system. Only have to re-check the tension every 40K miles or so. And the stock system does warn you if the belt starts to get loose.

For almost any production car the bean counters get in the way. I bet every mechanic on the design team wanted a three piece but the bean counters figured they could save a few bucks on the car and they won.

I guess you are doing the same thing right now.

it would have been really nice on the 928 if the hood was wide enough you could pull the heads without pulling the motor. Would have made my valve crash repair about $5000 cheaper.
