Calling, Dave! Calling, Dave! Please come down here and collect your crappy weather. Thank you!

Porsche-poor 11-20-2013 04:54 PM

Oh hell no! It's just cold here no rain. Remember that picture you took of Seattle with blue sky. Karma man Karma.

Rick V 11-20-2013 04:55 PM

You can have my crappy weather too.

Porsche-poor 11-20-2013 04:56 PM

I said it was cold here to what more do you want? Worse yet I'm going farther North on Friday. So take off Eh!

Being a yankee is kinda like being a Marine (once:always)......but with way less respect, no bragging rights and, typically, way fewer spoons (obviously, you don't meet that one)

HHI944 11-20-2013 07:24 PM

My new barrel.....didn't show up today, it'll be tomorrow though...
Most Noveske barrels are out of stock at the major suppliers and there's a bit of doubt about the company with the founder having died earlier this year, but their reputation is incredible.
I'm thinking the 9.2" quad rail free float from yankee hill with iron at the longest sight radius and hopefully a DPMS Levang comp.....if they don't start showing back up soon though, I'll break down and buy a kx3.....just prefer to go the DPMS route for $40 vs the kx3 for $130

Okay Glen so what does the crank look like? I see some brass there.

The crank is pristine. No scratches at all and it mics out perfect.

GH85Carrera 11-20-2013 08:09 PM

The intermediate shaft bearings had some wear.

The heads are all finished except the new springs will go on instead of the stock ones.

Them parts is all purdy. Is that blue from cc'ing the heads? Any porting or fancy valve grinds?

When I did my valve job, the big power 928 builders told me I should spend about $23K on super lightweight valves, custom springs, and some fancy super lightweight lifters with some kind of special coating. Thought that was unnecessary because more aggressive cams I put in were from the stocke 5.0 liter 928 GT. The GT and the GTS use the same heads, lifters, springs, valves, etc from the factory. The GT cams alone produce from 35 to 40 more hp across the entire rpm over the GTS cams on the 5.4 liter motor.

There were 3 more aggressive cam options, but the increased cost of those cams plus the additional need for lighter weight lifters, and custom valve springs to match the cam would have doubled the total cost of my engine rebuild. The slightly used, (40,000 mile) GT cams I got were the same cost as one new GTS cam to replace the broken one. With the GT cams, port matching the intake to the head, x-pipe exhaust, and some ECU tweaking I went from 350hp to 420hp. It's enough increase that I'm a little over 80% duty cycle on my injectors WOT and should go up a size.

Did NOT have any flow work done on the heads or intake because the word is Porsche did a pretty good job and any flow work that's been tried ends up decreasing the velocity filling the cylinder and kills power. The stroker and supercharger guys claim all but the stock intake go well over 600 hp. Above 500hp the 6 liter and over stroker guys replace the intake with Individual Throttle Bodies.

The only thing I wish I had done WIWIT was to go ahead and pull the pistons and drill out the oil ring relief holes. Porsche left them undrilled so the oil wiped from the cylinder wall does not have anywhere to go, gets burnt, carbons up the top of the piston, and sometimes causes preignition. Porsche claims it was to make the motor last longer. When the GTS was new, if you complained about the oil usage, Porsche would replace the motor with one that the only difference was those oil relief hole were drilled in the pistons. The mechanic did clean all the carbon out and found the valve crash just chipped the carbon and didn't even mark the tops of the pistons.

Woke up really early this morning. After getting hit with the dentists sledge hammer yesterday, my jaw, gums, and tongue still hurt…went to the eye doctor today, got dilated twice, and got a shot in the eye. Couldn't see so I took a couple of pain killers and hit the fart sac as it were.

Soo, you guys get the pleasure of reading and/or ignoring my way too early morning ramblings. :)

This might be interesting to some of you 944 guys...One of the other decisions I made on the GTS rebuild was to keep the stock timing belt tensioner. There is one everyone is going to made from an Audi belt tensioner.

With the stock tensioner the belt tension needs to be periodically checked and re-adjusted as the belt stretches over time. Porsche says once after 2000 miles with a new belt, and then after 40,000 miles. With the Audi tensioner the same tension is maintained as the belt stretches. So, the belt only needs to be checked periodically for wear and never needs re-adjusted.

On the 928 the stock tensioner has a contact that triggers a dash warning that the timing belt is getting loose. It is pretty sensitive so depending on the age of the belt and how many times it has been re-tensioned you can typically take it easy and make it to a garage to get the belt re-tensioned or replaced. Because the Audi tensioner would only have too much slack if the belt had already broke there is no loose belt warning.

Not long after I got the GTS my toothed belt waring light came on. The belt had been replaced just 2000 miles before I got the car. The warning went off while I was sitting in a McDonalds drive-thru just idling. Mechanic found the belt needed tensioning AND the bolts holding the tensioner on were loosening. He rebuilt the tensioner and I had no more warnings.

The next time my toothed belt warning came on I was road tripping at high speed. Right after lifting off the accelerator to slow down from 140mph the light came on. I pulled over immediately and called two mechanics. The one the rebuilt the tensioner, and one that was only 30 miles from my current location. They had me start the car and let it idle for 10 minutes and agreed that if the light did not come back on to drive to the closest mechanic and have him check it out. There is some kind of loop in the warning system that the light will come back on after 3 minutes if the problem persists.

Got to the mechanic with no more warnings. He pulled the timing belt covers, checked the belt tension, and inspected everything you usually would like the water pump, rollers, etc. The tension was correct and he could find nothing. For good measure he replaced the connector on the wire going to the tensioner sensor. Didn't have any more warnings for another 2000 miles which included auto crossing and high speed driving.

The next time the waring came on was the same situation where I had lifted from over 140mph on the highway. Was more than half way to Dallas where the mechanic was that checked it before so called him. He said to just take it easy and bring it to his house. Well the light came on a couple more times when I lifted, then bang and the valve crash.

Inspecting the carnage we found the end of the cam had sheared off where the keyway is for the hub that is used to adjust the timing gear before tightening it down. One of the prongs on the hub was broken off and gone. There was a line of rust on the back of the timing gear where the hub prong had evidently been cracked for some time before it loosened enough to wear the keyway and break. Everyone I talked to said it the hub prong cracking and breaking was a defective part that just broke.

The really interesting part is that the timing belt warning was telling that there was something wrong. Just that nobody knew to check that timing gear adjustment hub. Evidently the hub loosening from the crack in the part was causing a vibration that was being picked up by the timing belt and setting off the warning. It had nothing to do with the looseness of the belt. Having that warning, even though not able to find the problem at the time is why I decided to keep the stock tensioner.

If that thing goes off now and the belt is still the proper tension, the whole front of the motor is coming apart and getting inspected!
