Well the Magnesium Borate is used by that dude that made the movie Borat to make his wheels, Magnesium Phosphate is for his laundry detergent.

Glen gets it.

It's for a liquid fertilizer. There is a bunch of other things in there, but that is what we are deducing is happening. We are having a precipitate fall out over time that is insoluble and it would clog screens in the farmers sprayers, so that is not good.

You aren't gonna let me have any fun with it are you...

Just my brain I guess, mention fertilizers and I think, "Blowed up real good."

He is having an insoluble precipitate falling out of solution over time. I say it's Magnesium Phosphate, he is led to believe that it is Magnesium Borate. I have a hard time believing his because the pH isn't anywhere near high enough to crash the boric acid out into a metal borate salt.

That kind of excited me there for a bit. I love science and trying to figure that stuff out. In some ways I think I should have gone into microbiology. Smearing bacteria onto Petri dishes, growing it, doing research. Fun stuff.

Back in the olden days when film was king my job was to process film at a professional photo lab.

I ran one processor for color slides and one for negatives. To get the best results from slide film and be a Kodak Q-lab I had to do a lot of tests and process a test strip of film they provided.

I tried to teach several of the other employees there how to do it and their eyes glazed over when I got to the digital titrator and the steps needed. I had a chemistry set as a kid and loved it. I would have paid money to "get" to do that as a kid. It real was a pain in the butt when I had production to get out.

When we were looking at houses almost got one with a pool. I thought just what I needed, spending an extra 10 to 15 minutes every day play chemist with the pool.

And I've never heard of pool chemicals blowing up either.

Really?

I watched a friend with a pool pour some pinesol on a can of powdered chlorine, it did not explode, but it blew some great balls of fire! It was cool.

Oh man, I knew shoudda got that house by the lake with the pool. Probably would have used the non-chlorine pool chemicals though because of my Brother's MS.

but I do remember Steve nearly killing himself with chlorine fumes once with the pool chlorine! Had to tell him to come inside before he died. He is well insured, but .... who would do the gardening then

and yes, then the one who had at that time just finished his first year University Chemistry unit, had to give him a lecture on the dangers of Chlorine fumes and chemical reactions lol.

Obviously too far away from Steve's chemistry studies for him to remember

There are a couple classes that I forgot I took until I looked at my transcript pre-graduation. I still don't believe I took Calc 3. I think it was just AP credit. But maybe not. I thought my first class was Calc 4 but it wasn't according to my transcript. Might have been Calc 3. Might have been Statics. Might have been the Intro to ME course.

Good Morning folks.

I got an email from a co-worker from 25 or 30 years ago. Wow, probably closer to 33 years ago.

She lives in Boston now and she found me on Linked-in.

Way back then her parents lived just outside of Eureka Springs, AR. The local Porsche club had a fall foliage tour going to Eureka Springs so I invited her to ride along with me. She would spend the night with her parents and get to see them.

Back in the stone ages before cell phones and when I was young and stupid I tended to on occasion drive just slightly above the speed limit on the tours. I know that is shocking to hear.

At one of the rest stops her comment was that she had no idea anyone ever really drove that fast. She thought that was only in the movies.

She mentioned that she still vividly remembers that ride after all the years.
