There are lots of places to stop along I-40. It is not like parts of south Utah or northern Nevada. Heck you can even stop at the continental divide in NM. It is just a wide spot in the road and easy to miss.

Actually Eastern, OK has trees and looks like Arkansas. Western OK has some pretty rolling hills. Of course this time of year there is not much green stuff to see. Texas and New Mexico is boring until Albuquerque.

Well I doubt I would have a fuel issue in the Boxster but I will carry a few gallons of fuel with Peggy

Rick, there are fuel stops every 40 miles or so on I40 through NM. I think the longest stretch on that run without fuel is maybe 70miles? You should be fine even in a gas hog! I think I could drive from OKC to Phoenix in my sleep, I've done it too many times recently!

The only consideration between ABQ and Phoenix this time of year is the weather. Occasionally I40 will drift over with snow to the point of being CLOSED. Ask me how I know?

The 144 through Tx it is. The Boxster and snow don't really go well together. Just my luck I'll wind up in one of those Tx ice storms

The only thing I disliked about taking the I40 route was once (spring, 2010) they closed it on us in eastern AZ because of a big sandstorm. We ended up working our way west on smaller roads, and we never did get all of the sand out of Lu's beater Jetta.

Still watch the weather. The time dad and I got stuck, Joe A. had told us we should have gone the south route(10hours out of the way), but it ended up being closed due to snow too! But that doesn't happen too often. We have been getting a lot of moisture in the last week, so just keep an eye on the weather ahead of you.

Yea, for sure watch the weather. We had some friends that took the southern route and got snowed in and I-44 northern route was clear.

If I head out this week it will be a cannonball run kind of thing, I am not going to do any stopping except to get fuel coffee and lighten my load. I will have a great deal of things to do in Tucson. When we bring Lanna out, it is the "hey look the worlds largest mustard bottle, lets stop" kind of trip

It is funny how the folks in this thread have actually kind of grown int a social group. I talked to Sid for a bit today, I talked to D yesterday and very rarely does a day go by that I am not trading jokes with Stijn. I have met G, Dave, I talk to David and Azzy fairly regular like I have had breakfast with Pete. It really is becoming a small world

And then you have a- holes like me sending you bad weather.
. For your big move if you come down I-44 that is along side of RT66 for much of it until it meets up to I-40 and goes west to the land of fruits and nuts.

I am just back online from taking 40 from Cali to NC.(Left 11PM PST saturday, got in around 2PM today) Six people, one with a shorter bladder time meant we spent more time in stops than when I've done this before as a duo.
New Mexico/Arizona as of our driving through, just had snow/ice/water off the sides of the road as of driving through. Not sure what new weather has hit since Sunday. This picture from California speedway before our 12hr race Saturday, shows snowfall on the mountains, but it melted within a few hours and all was brown again.

Traveling with Beth means that she has to empty her tank about twice as often as I need to fill the cars tank. I have seen a lot of gas stations and country stores.
Glen you don't send me bad weather, you just forecast mine for me. Pete is the a55hole that brings me snow

Out further west, on my past few trips, no issues with closed stations, its just a matter of space apart can be 1 1/2-2hrs. GPS if its not smart, can you lead into closed/non existant roads. Lot of GPS drivers end up taking the dead end dirt road off the dead end paved road and end up with a when it dead ends at my parent's driveway when the GPS lays out a path that says they need to cut across my parents yard, through the woods behind their house, across a creek with no bridge, through more woods, through a housing development, and then the road they are looking for.
