It is very hodge podged together software, but it does work and he does not subscribe to any TV, video, or movie services. The only down side is he never watches anything live.
We have a home theater PC. All of our movies are ripped to it and it streams as well. It works well for the kids when they want to watch a movie as they don't have to handle the disks. The case looks like this:

We use Kodi (used to be XBMC) for all of our media management. It handles local content and streaming. We also have over the air TV for news and such.

Sometimes tearing stuff up with equipment is fun! Just don't take out more than you need to!

The big difference is my friend's system goes out and finds content on the internet on it's own and adds them to his library. No subscriptions or uploading DVDs to the system.

Back in the day, my engineer brother was replacing his sewer line from his house to the main, it had collapsed where it turns down and made it's own sewage tank that slowly drained into the main line.

When I arrived at his house he and his teenage kids were digging with shovels. I turned around, left, rented a backhoe, and returned. Brother took over and dug the whole thing out himself. Guess he just needed someone to show him what the right tool was.

The next weekend after he got all the cast iron pipe installed and inspected he called me to come help fill it in. I asked if he had the backhoe or wanted me to stop and get it. He said shut up and don't bother coming to help. I dropped by and he had gone and rented the backhoe himself after he called.

There are add-ons for that as well, but we don't do any torrenting or there would be a huge library.

One of our customers retired from a job in San Diego and sold his little house on a golf course for a ton of money. He bought a 1/4 section of land (160 acres) a few miles east of my house. He wanted to build a road to the hill near the center of the property. There was just a little trail that a jacked up 4x4 pickup could get back there. Lots of trees and very uneven.

He worked one weekend with a chain saw and his pickup and made a foot of so of progress. He finally realized it would be a 10 year project to build his dirt road so he called a company with a D-10 Caterpillar. They cleared the trees and built the road in hours.

Now he has a 5,000 sq foot house 12 horse barn and a 8 car garage with a virtual nature preserve and a nice compacted gravel road up to the house.

That D-10 did more in an hour than he could have done in years.

Yeah, well when there is a low mileage Cimarron in your drive way you will know he hit it big. Or you need to hit someone. Or something on that order.
