My commute now is just 8 miles. It averages 12 minutes each way most days.

I have about 20-25 minutes. Most of my travel is highway with out much traffic. Double that if the snow is bad since Dubuque has a hard time clearing its streets properly. Highway 11 is usually cleared pretty well but there have been a few days I called in for weather.

It's about 40km for me and I have cattle, roos, and dingoes to dodge, sometimes an eagle or two. The eagles are normally only a problem in summer or the afternoon. The roos in the early morning or night. Dingoes after a good season, but the bloody ninja cattle are crazy all the time.

For me the deer & skunks are about the only critters I worry about. The deer are just stupid and sometimes suicidal. The skunks just STINK like crazy. I have been lucky enough to never take out a skunk. I have to drive by more than a few dead skunks in the middle of the road.

The squirrels, possums, armadillos, rabbits and other small critters are no big deal.

When we lived in our other house my commute was 7 miles. When I worked night shift in the machine shop I often rode my bicycle back and forth. Walked several times also. Bicycle only took 15 minutes, driving took 20, walking over an hour. Once I got a daytime office job it just wasn't convenient to get to work with a sweat on. In the non-air conditioned machine shop it didn't matter.

Moved 7 miles. The commute increased to 9 miles. Takes about 20-25 minutes depending on traffic. Never tried to ride a bicycle after the move because of the sweat thing even though most of the commute does have a bike lane on 4 lane road the is plowed first as a snow route.

Company started increasing employee count and office space got real crowded. Managing email and servers did not require me to be on-site and I was taking care of my mom, boss asked if I would work from home. Moved my office that very day and have been working from home for the last 6 years. Only buy gas for the Cayenne once a month.

The company has purchased the land and is planning to build and move to just 4 miles from my current house. That is most likely 7 years away though.

When people say they have an x mile commute, does that mean it's x miles each way, or x miles round trip?

fintstone 07-27-2015 03:07 PM

Beats me...I think I travel about 65 miles each way.

Porsche-poor 07-27-2015 03:16 PM

almost done with Monday.

Most people measure the commute in distance from their home to their office. Not the total of both going and coming. You only use both going and coming when you start figuring transportation mileage. Same with insurance. I have always gotten a discount for traveling less than 10 miles one way from home to work. Which doesn't make sense to me since most accidents happen within 3 miles of home.

If your commute is far enough you can afford to purchase (and or make payments on) a high gas mileage car with the monies saved by the difference in gas cost.

Guy at work explained he hated having a car payment, but the difference in gas cost between his paid for Jeep Cherokee and a hybrid Prius made the Prius payment.

Have owned the Cayenne S for a full year this month.

How many hours is your commute? I couldn't imagine driving in that traffic daily.

Noah930 07-27-2015 06:53 PM

I go against traffic, as I live in an urban-ish area and go out to the sticks. It's 45 miles (one way ;)) on Monday, 100 miles on Tuesday, a home game of only 5 miles on Wednesday, a three-legged trek of about 50 miles 'round on Thursdays, and I alternate on Fridays between 45 miles and 5 miles.

For a guy who lives only 5 miles from the office, I drive over 14K miles per year for commuting/work.

GH85Carrera 07-27-2015 07:44 PM

I was saying it is 8 miles either way on average for me. It is about 1/4 mile further going home but it is faster going home than to work because of the way the onramp for the two miles of highway are laid out from the way I usually go. If there is frozen crap I go a longer distance but more highway and way less hills.
