i have those size wheels on my 951. and yes, the tires seem to follow every single non-planar feature of the road. it doesn't matter if i have race compound tires, my street tires, or snow tires, they all do it.

Hmm? I felt every line and crack in the pavement, but there was no unusual wander of the steering. Car tracked true and straight. "Driving on rails" has always been a good thing, no?

i forgot to mention that i have about 1 degree of camber dialed into the front suspension, so that might be part of it. my steering is a bit twitchy.

Is the car lowered? If the car is lowered it's possible to have a bit of bump steer. Coupled with an aggressive alignment, it will cause the car to dive into any dips or cracks in the road.

I've driven a race car with bad bump steer before and it's an experience.

mine isn't lowered. but it does track dips, cracks, paint stripes, whatever. what is really fun is when they 'resurface' the freeways here, in the spring, by grinding the top half inch or so down, leaving a deeply grooved and wavy surface.

Not lowered enough and no aggressive alignment. It drives in a straight line on smooth roads. I guess the example from last night was when I pulled over to my left to let a motorcycle pass on the right and the tires hit the raised paint. That's when it really felt like I was on rails as the wheels followed the paint line. You can let go of the wheel and the car goes straight, it just follows the line. I noticed a similar thing in my old Scirocco that had wider tires.

The wider tires create a larger scrub distance and amplifies caster effects which in turn affect steering response.

That "feel" never bothered me. On the contrary, I liked it. I liked how communicative the steering felt, though that never detracted from the actual handling of the car. It's like the car would tell me exactly what each contact patch was doing, just for information's sake.

Of course, I had a set of Nittos about 10 years ago (that I ran on my Nissan) that were terrible. That was the fault of the tread pattern. They wandered over rain grooves on the highway to the point even passengers would comment. It wasn't the fault of the alignment. It doesn't sound like that's what you're complaining about, Dave.

FWIW I haven't noticed much difference in steering feel or effort between the stock 205/245 pairing and the 235/275 tires I have on, now.

I'm not complaining. I was just wondering if it was something you felt as well. It's just really noticeable now.

When I went up in tires sizes with the Scirocco, I was told that would happen and it did, but that car was designed with certain tire sizes and I went above them.

Porsche designed the 911/930's to run with 6's,7's,8's and 9's... The 225/245's are still within what Porsche used.

Anyway, just wondering.

Found a new apartment on Hermsoa Ave in Hermsoa Beach, 1 block towards to sand from where I am now.

I'm going to be paying double rent for one month since I just gave my 30 days notice to my current landlord and the guys in this apartment moving out on Hermosa Ave have to be out in 1 week.

But I'm going to be living with an old friend from college who I got a job for at work, so things are pretty cool.

If you haven't tried it, yet, my favorite Mexican place is El Tarasco, a little bit north of your new digs. Where Rosecrans hits the beach. I think it's at the intersection of Rosecrans and Highland (or whatever the main drag is that runs parallel to the beach). There's another El Tarasco in the Marina, too.
