David, I bet LingLong had a set for that car! They would have had similar traction to a billiar ball, but they would be cheap. Plus, those are AWD!

At the photolab where I worked for many years one of our good customers was Dayton Tire, here in Oklahoma City. They were a customer of my computer graphics department and added directly to my paycheck. So I figured I would use their Daytona brand of tires. They had the right size and they were pretty cheap. The traction was scary in the rain, and they would wear out in 25,000 miles or less. I wish Michelin or Pirelli made tires in my size for the EL Camino. I may have to break down and get 16 inch wheels to get some really good tires. Now that the BF Goodrich tires are $200 each there is no reason to stick with them.
After 28 years and 310,000 miles plus put on the Elky I have gone through a lot of tires. Dry rot sure is not an issue. The level of tires in the 15 inch wheel sizes for it are always the bottom level of tires. I don't think I have ever gone more than 30,000 miles on a set. The tires wear at a nice even way. It is not a bad wear problem, just not great tires. The rear tires wear fast due to the limited slip rear end. On smooth dry concrete or asphalt I can hear them protest in a tight turn. If I give it much gas they will chirp. The fronts were evenly, and the set wears out all at the same point. |
Put a set of Pirelli pzeros on my 914 when they were supposed to be their best performance tires. They were as bad as Goodyear R1 slicks in the wet. Used to say you could spit in front of the car and cause it to spin out.
Put new tires on my BMW 3 Series. Driving home from the tires shop I thought I had made a huge mistake. They were the worst tires I had ever driven on. They were not only slike and had no traction, they were horribly squirmy. Felt like they didn't have enough air. Checked the pressures when I got home and the tire shop had put 48psi in each! Bled them down to the 34psi listed on the door and they felt and performed great. Was disappointed a tire shop would do that. |

Yes it is a study abroad program. be there about 5.5 months. 10 classes, two a day 5 days a week.

Our son did the study abroad thing, too. A semester at a university in Beijing. After the semester was over, he and a friend traveled around China for about a month and then our son traveled by himself to Hong Kong and Taiwan. He really enjoyed the experience.

At this point the plan is to spend an extra week over there after we show up before coming home.

My aunt did a stint in Japan and one in Brazil. Talk about two totally different cultures. She said in Brazil if a TV show was scheduled for 7:00 it might start by 7:20 depending on how lazy or not the studio was that day.

What about a 215/65/15? Should be the same circumference.
BFG makes some Rival or something in a little shorter 225/40 or 245/40 series tires. Not much better price though. Roger Krause has several in your size if you want new vintage tires. |
I really don't want to get into the low profile tires. They just don't look right on it. The suspension is not exactly sophisticated on the Elky. The larger 60 series tires help smooth out the pot holes. I don't think I have had it aligned more than twice except after changing out the A-arms in the 28 years I have had it.
My last few sets of 15 inch tires on the e 911 were low profile tires, and I never did like the way they looked. It was the only choice left at the time. Now even those are gone. I do like the 17 inch wheels and tires on the 911 now. I just played with the tire and wheel selection from Tire Rack. It was over $1,700 for new 17s and tires, mounted to the new wheels. I just don't wanna spend that much. |
All this talk of tires reminds me that the 944 needs fresh rubbber. I can’t find anything decent in 225/50/15. Really considering running R888s for street tires. I don’t have to deal with rain out here, and having sticky tires would be fun.... 🤣

SID, for a car that seems to sit in the garage most of the time the R888 might be a good choice. You don't need to worry too much about snow and ice.
I wonder how they will do in 120 degree weather. The road has to be 150 degrees or so on those days. Do you dive it in the middle of Summer? |
Only in the evenings during the summer. It’s just too damn hot even for a waterpumper with good ac. Just don’t want to put that much stress on the car
