Brent, is tankless an option for you? If i had more power in my garage I would have gone tank less when I changed mine. Changing them out isn't hard. Moving that beast may suck though. But if you are comfortable with minor plumbing and electrical it's easy.

Tankless would be less efficient for us. Anytime the geothermal unit is running (heat or A/C), it is putting hot water in the tank. If it weren't for those days we don't run the unit a hot water tank would do fine for us. When the heating element went bad on ours it could have been bad for 6 months and we would have never known it.

But....

I looked into tank-less for natural gas. It was going to require a new gas line from the meter to the tank. I checked around on forums and magazine articles. The good quality units are EXPENSIVE and still have issues. In the end for the two of us the payback was about 40 years. I suspect I will live to be a little bit less than 100 so it just did not make sense. We never have yet run out of hot water. It is just not an issue for us.

I have heard the same about the point of use heaters, but they make sense in a house that has a long run from the water heater and they are a lot less expensive than a whole house tankless.

Funny you should mention 40 years, when we were looking at dad's AO Smith water heater we saw that it is 43 years old. Ours is less than 12.

My parents bought a deep freeze when I was a little kid. It made a move to Hawaii, Alabama, Texas and Oklahoma. It lasted well over 40 years. In fact their house had a limb fall on the power wire from the pole. When the electrician hooked it up he reversed the wires and every single electrical thing in the house was fried, except that freezer. They had to get a new TV, Fridge, AC, and every radio and gizmo that was plugged in. The insurance company was not happy with that electrician.

Harbor freight has a similar glove that is about 3.99 a pair when they are on sale. Those are my go to gloves for garage work. Padding on tr back, fit good enough to do pretty much everything while wearing them. And cheap enough to toss when they start looking ugly.

People bag on HF stuff all the time but some of the stuff is pretty decent for what you pay. My old boss bought a side grinder because it was cheaper than renting one and he really only needed it for the one small job. Why not have it around in case yo need it again. Some I wouldn't get for a professional use tool though.

I have been to the closest Harbor Freight only once. It is 11 miles away from my office in a very busy traffic area. I can go to a local owned tool store called Steve's Wholesale. They have the Harbor Freight level, the mid range tools and the professional level tools. Often one of each grade of tool. It is a family owned store. And it does not have the Harbor Freight funky smell.

The other huge advantage it has is over HF it is just a few blocks from one of my favorite restaurants, Ann's Chicken Fry. Both places are on Rt-66. I can pig out at Ann's then mosey over to browse tools at Steve's.

Well looks like another hot day here in Va. Tons of sun and lots of heat, I love it.
I rolled into HF once and I didn't stay long, there was really nothing in there for me. Since I make my living with tools I buy the top of the line stuff, although it wasn't always that way. I started out with Crapsman and got so tired of breaking tools, having them not do the job well, and in David's case the wrenches are just too damn thick I slowly replaced all the stuff with Strap-On. I can't even stand the feel of cheap tools. Now having said that Strap-On has a value line called Blue-Point, and the wrenches are half the price but the only difference is the finish, well guess what Cobalt wrenches are made by the same company, so for a decent set of wrenches at a decent price, there ya go

The socket set and socket wrench I use is a Japanese set I bought in 1971. The brand name is Fuller. Besides the 14 mm socket that I somehow lost it is the same set I have used since then. I have never even rebuilt the socket wrench ratchet itself. It is the quality Japanese stuff but but not snap on quality.

Yea, I bought a Snap-on extension and wobble spark plug socket to use on the 911. Just a short locking extension and wobble socket was over $100. It sure makes it nice for changing plugs.



This storm is right over Hydro close to Sid's parents place. On the bottom of that list is Frontier City. That is just a few miles from my house. This one is going to be watched closely. I have one and a half hours to watch it. Oklahoma Cristian is even closer. 1/2 mile from Richard's house and my house.

They are calling for storms every evening here for the next week but nothing like way Y'all flat landers have to deal with. Ours are just regular ol' thunderstorms

That is all it is now, just a thunderstorm. Three different storm cells have merged. The rotation is weakened. It has changed speeds and is now supposed got get here at 8:30 but it is falling apart which is good. The TV station we are watching has a one chopper and two other ground spotters and of course radar that is better than the National Weather Service has. The other two stations are doing the same thing.

Got crapsman tools and stuff mostly as gifts growing up. Back then they were good because they was guaranteed. Then learned it's not the breaking, it's the disappearing that's the problem. Before a project had to go to Sears and replace the missing bits (usually the commonly used ones).

Once got a small cheap set to keep in the car when traveling. Tried to use them once and they brokeded. Until then I never imagined a bolt would round off a socket instead of the other way round.

At one of the 928 gatherings a guy who's family makes and sells Cresent tools gave me a very nice 100 pcs set in one of those fold out pastic case things. To me it was cool because the only adjustable knuckle busters we had when I was growing up were Cresent. We even called em cresent wrenches instead of adjustable wrenches. Found the ONLY tool in the set that DIDN"T have Cresent emblazened on it was the adjustable wrench. Pointed it out to him and he was visibly shocked and had no idea.

While those fold out cases sure keep the tools organized, It takes 3 acres of work bench to open it up to get to the tools.

Drove across town this afternoon. It rained while going, sunshine coming back. In the rain some people were driving really really slow, 30mph on the highway, and under all the overpasses was packed with stopped cars. It was just rain, no severe warnings or anything. And it was light enough and there was no water standing on the roads... i had no problems going 70mph.

The three storms combined together and then just fizzled out. We received .01 inch of rain. No complaints.
