Win 7 is no big whoop. I've been running it on my MacBook Pro for months. It's just Vista without most of the annoyances, and it should be pretty stable, thought if I were using it for business I'd wait for a Service Pack or two.

The biggie from Microsoft is a new comprehensive antivirus package they are coming out with. It's long overdue and will potentially solve the major issue with Windows platforms.

For me, I own a Dell that's a dedicated game machine and not connected to the Internet. Other than more/better games, I can't imagine any reason you'd want to own a Windows box.

It is just vista with some bugs and annoyances polished out.

I just ordered the 27" iMac with the i7 quad core. I'm so pumped.

ZDnet has an article comparing Windows 7 and Mac's Snow Leopard:

FWIW.

I've had a Mac for around a year now and I'm completely unimpressed by it. It locks up once in a while for absolutely no reason which causes me to force it to shut down. And it takes a year to hook up a digital camera to it. Don't get me wrong it's fine, I'm just not that impressed with it.

Peripheral compatibility and ease of use is a big one. plug in a camera, any camera from any box store, and it's nearly guaranteed to work. This is amazing for the 10 year olds who just got a camera for their birthday, or mom and dad who don't want to have to deal with drivers and install packages just to share photos. Put in a printer, it works. Hook up an mp3 player, it works. Whatever you put into a USB port will be just that easy. That's what windows has over pretty much any other operating system.

Have the Mac checked out or reload the Op System. That's not normal. If you're otherwise unimpressed with it, sell it and go with a PC. Life is too short to be frustrated by a computing tool.

+1 for what sherwood said. What do you have? I've been on Macs for 6 years and have never had a lock up. The only application to ever crash and close has been Microsoft entourage.

If I plug my camera in, it opens iPhoto and is ready to download in about 20 seconds. (I have a an iMac G4)

Bad stick of RAM would be most likely suspect.

Which model/year?

You're kidding, right? Mac has run that way for years. It will be nice if Win7 finally gets closer to parity.

Taken right off the receipt - iMac/20/2.4/1GB/SD

I do also have a PC running good old Windows 2000 Pro, love it.

....question for the techies. Is there any benefit to the 64bit version of W7 over the 32bit version? Is it faster? More of a resource hog? Will all the apps that run on my Vista 32bit work with a 64bit OS? ......

I know hardware drivers could be an issue. This is for a home computer running simple, off the shelf software - Office, IE, etc....

Been running it on 3 machines for a couple of months, works great; or should I say works like Vista should have been. As far as big business, why switch unless you have to? Nothing big enough in 7 to make me switch if I were a Company of any size.
The issue is XP won't be supported forever.

Everything but 1 worked with it (apps and hardware), a USB to serial converter. It won't work on any version and I've tried 2 of them. I need these to console into network gear so it's pretty important.

As far a MS and anti-virus, you're kidding right?, it's like me being the tanning lotion application technician for the swedish bikini team; would I let Microsoft look after anti-virus to protect their OS??? NO!

As far as 64bit, more RAM, and if you had a real 64bit processor I would suppose better performance.

Get a Mac, nuff said

Tried to upgrade one of my Vista Ultimate boxes to Windows 7 Enterprise and received the message that an upgrade cannot be performed and that I need to do a complete install, which I'm not prepared to do right now...

There was an issue with iMac 20 in locking back in 07' that was addressed with a graphics card firmware update.

Also some recent reports relating to 20 in with the ATI Radeon HD 4850 chipset.

How old is the machine and have you kept software/firmware current?

I bought it on 1-04-09. It's still under warranty. I've done nothing to it.

Go under the Apple icon upper left, pick About this Mac then click more info.

In 1st category click on Graphics/Displays, 1st line should be Chipset model. What's it say?

If it's still under warranty I'd take it in.

I'll check this out when I get home. But the last thing I want to do is wait in line at the Apple Store to talk to a condescending "genius".

You don't need to.

If under warranty just back up your important stuff, take it in and drop it off.

Solid lockup could be software/firmware but I'm leaning towards hardware, video card or a bad stick of RAM.

Genius Bar is really for people looking to get a fix on the spot so if you don't mind waiting a day for diagnoses then just leave it with them.

You can also make an appointment online that fits your schedule so no real waiting when you show up.
