One thing most homeless lack (other than - a home, ha ha) is common sense.
Doesn't sound like he was running from the officers, they were "rousting" them (i.e., getting them to move on) and the guy just gave a parting shot as he was Huffy-ing away. That's not entirely unexpected behavior from some homeless dude on a bike - who probably was some low life showing off for his low life friends, as you speculate. However, one should expect a little more professional behavior from a government law enforcement agent, or at a minimum that law enforcement officer's behavior should not be deemed "hilarious" or applauded. The officer is paid to deal with low lifes like that, on a professional level. That's part of the territory, and if he can't handle it he should not be an officer. When you have government officers administering "technically" illegal beatings on citizens on a personal whim, that's fascism. Last edited by McLovin; 01-05-2010 at 03:20 PM.. |

if a cop pulls me over to coasting through a red light, and i tell him to **** himself as i peel out, the cop has every right to jump on my ass. i could have got away with a warning or pain in the ass ticket. but running turned it into an incident. and it was still damn funny.

He would smack you for peeling out(a crime), and leaving the scene while detained(also a crime).
The way you told the original story, none of these charges apply to the situation. What's more, if cops arrested everyone that was drunk, none of us would be on the streets.... LOL I'm not saying it wasn't amusing personally, but in the big picture, we as a society need to end cops that think their night stick and badge give them the right to do whatever they want. |

I think you have it backwards. In a perfect world, there wouldn't be any cops.

Yup. But the guy's a cop and is (supposedly) trained not to. That's my only point.

Look, you can't argue with with this. Countless people have died and continue to die in wars to protect the US constitution, which grants citizens the right to free speech. Police officers are employed to, among other things, uphold those rights. I don't care if it "seems" right to beat someone up for calling a black person a nigger, which of course is a reprehensible action. But it's also a legal action, in every jurisdiction of the US. Period. Police officers, by the very nature of their profession, are held to a higher standard than "regular" citizens, and so should they be. This officer seems incapable of controlling his emotions and should therefore not be interacting with members of the public while on duty.

+1 The Supreme Court has ruled that cops are supposed to be impervious to such verbal abuse... something about them supposededly being thicker skinned than the average citizen.

Most cops are great and do a job I wouldn't ever want to have to do dealing with the scum-of-the-earth on a daily basis, however as with any profession there are a few douchebags. The guy in the O.P. example is one such example. I find nothing whatsoever "funny" about it. This is a seriously unstable individual out there on the public dole with a badge and a gun. Scary stuff. I'm seriously disappointed that this incident was not reported and (hopefully) investigated.
Yeah the homeless guy was an idiot but OTOH this cop has ZERO business acting out in anger like that while on the job. None. They are supposed to "protect and serve". I'm sure there are incidents every day for most cops that make them WANT to give some idiot a smack across the mouth, but part of what makes them worthy of society's respect is the ability to stay cool under such situations and do their jobs - you know, like professionals. I respect any cop that can do that. The ones that put up with the name-calling, the abuse, the being spat at, swung at, etc. It's undoubtedly a difficult job but what makes some cops "heroes" worthy of my respect and admiration and other ones just goons with a uniform is how they REACT to such situations. It's not just cops either. I've seen "professionals" in the business world make both respectable gentlemen of themselves and others make complete a-holes of themselves who will never get my respect based on their ACTIONS in the face of adversity, stress, etc. "Taking the high road" always makes one take notice and goes a long way towards earning my respect. Acting like a goon doesn't. It doesn't impress me and it doesn't intimidate me. I don't find this issue entertaining in the least. Or funny. This is a serious problem and it absolutely should be reported and acted upon.
