I drove a 4 dr BMW 1 series hatchback in Europe, all over Spain and France. It had the 160 hp, 1.8/2.0 liter turbo diesel. It did around 50 mpg / 20 km/l. Great car. I want one, but they don't import that model (1 series HB) to the US, let alone the diesel. You can't even get the 3 series with smaller than the 328 here. They make 318s. And I know they make a 1.6 liter 4 banger, for the 1 series.

There is no question the tank could have been in a better location. But the cause of the accident causing the death of the three girls was being hit in the rear, by a much larger vehicle, without a gas cap.

Actually the case that broke the Ford Pinto was a young man who was rear ended. I remember the trial that was held in Santa Ana, CA, my home town.

I doubt it. They are going to be hurting, but they will survive. But they need to get out in front of this.

Spoke to my brother again yesterday.

Sales are still going strong at his dealership. Lot of current Toyota owners trading up.

We may be hearing a lot of bad stuff but like most things, we judge based on our personal experience with a product and for 99% of current Toyota owners the recall issues are not something that they themselves have experienced.

My brother runs the shop. Tells me they are using this as an opportunity to create customer loyalty. A lot of the cars that are coming in have not seen the dealer shop in years. They are taking advantage of the traffic to try and convert those owners into repeat service customers by providing the best experience they can.

When life gives you lemons....
