Dude, it's my frikin brother. Not "some guy". And he has no reason whatsoever to lie to me. And I take a bit of exception to you, who has never met him in your life calling him one. Seriously.

Maybe it's just his dealership, the rest could very well be sucking wind for all we know.

Just relaying a bit of first hand information that I thought was interesting.

Yeah. When the trust factor is damaged, it takes more than just a recall.

I included that in my post above - maybe not explicitly enough. It depends on what exactly you mean by "ignored."

At an organizational level, as a corporation - yes. But how bad was it if you look inside that black box - look at it mechanistically?

Did they plan to stonewall and hope it would go away? Or did various people send memos out and the ones who got the memos took too long to decide how to figure out the problem(s) and their solutions?

The 1st case is REAL bad; the 2nd is more on the organizational fk-up level...

That's my point - we don't know yet what their level of culpability is.

So what is the difference between Toyota's recall and Ford's Pinto in the 70s? Did Ford lie and deceive? Is Toyota doing the same? As I said earlier around here, Ford seems to have recovered quite well since those dark days of bad ties and crispy passengers.

So far, zero recalls and zero problems with my '09 Mustang. Maybe Ford is serious about quality now?

I apologyze - I wasn't inferring that your brother is giving you a smokescreen - I'm saying that the dealership your brother works at, as well as the upper management team at Toyota are the ones giving the smokescreen -- to ensure that customer as well as workers like your brother don't bail.

The incident, the three girls who died in the Pinto, sparking the whole mess, was not as portrayed.

They had just left the gas station. They left the gas cap on the pump. Realizing this, they did a U-turn and came to a stop. A van then immediately hit them in the back.

There is no question the tank could have been in a better location. But the cause of the accident causing the death of the three girls was being hit in the rear, by a much larger vehicle, without a gas cap.

Police say the car reached a speed o 120 mph before it clipped an SUV and launched over and embankment, bursting into flames.
In other news, apparently leprechauns are writing the articles for LLN now.

Did the headlight issue come up in this discussion?

My Co-worker driving home the other night in a Prius lost her lights and went off the road that did not have street lights, luckily she was not hurt.

I had a buddy with an HF Civic CRX, we got just shy of 50 mpg on a trip to San Diego. Of course we stopped at the bottom of the Grapevine, and had been drafting off an RV for a good part of the stretch South of Stockton, but it got mid 40's without doing that.
