Not really. BMW's teasing this thing like it will be something special, which cracks me up. They show only the fender, like it's going to have this dramatically different shape. It's an ///M, guys - you'll add a quad exhaust, side skirts, and different bumpers - big whoop. Oh wait, it'll have a chipped turbo and a lowering kit, like half the Hondas and VWs out there - wow.

I was going to guess that the car would cost over $40K--maybe approaching the mid-40s--as the current 135 goes for around $36K (or at least it did when I took a look at it when it came out a couple years ago). But then I read the last line of the above linked article:

Quote:
BMW 1 Series M is priced at $61,000.

No f'n way.

Not really.

BMW M cars are dramatically different mechanically than the regular version.

Take the 3 series coupe for example. The M3 is a V8 (instead of a turbo 6), and just about every significant mechanical part is unique to the M3. Engine, transmission, brakes, suspension, etc. (And the carbon fiber roof, too).

M cars are not just exhaust bumpers and side skirts.

Having owned quite a few of the original M cars and been around a bunch more, I have to say that what passes for an M-series car these days doesn't interest me in the least. Fat, heavy, over-complicated pigs... Of course, I can say that about the entire BMW line...

Sold my last BMW last weekend and won't be replacing it...

Unfortunately, that describes all new cars (performance sedans) these days. I can't off the top of my head think of a current production performance sedan that is less fat, heavy, complicated than BMWs.

It's apparently what people want these days.

I'm with you, though. The cars that I drive every day are all between 10 and 20+ years old.

$70k for that?

Ehh, no.

And I have to admit I'm not a fan of the overly-complicated BMW marquee either. Give me an old 2002 or something. The new iDrive stuff just annoys the hell out of me. It's supposed to be a DRIVING machine, not a computer with a seat in it.

I love my E46 M3. Bought it used for $21.5K.

No, I would not pay $60K+ for a 1-series equivalent that needs a turbo to produce a little more HP than what my older M3 can do normally aspirated.

You folks always complain about the weight of the modern cars, and how they are all bloated, and you would pay for a smaller, lighter car closer to the olden goldies in weight...
The 1 series is exactly that, it's by default lighter then the 3...
So i would gather the 1M would be lighter then the M3.. which kinda explains how the regular 135I already gave the M3 a run for it's money... a souped up 1 M could really give it whoopass...

I'm just dissapointed they made the 1 M a coupe, and not the hatch, which just looks a lot better then the coupe.
The 1 Coupe just looks like a baby 3 series, while the (sports) hatch is something "different".

The 1 series has a very good layout/chassis, think "modern day 944"...
i went from a 1988 944S to a 2008 118D, the S was more raw in power, but handling wise, very comparable, the 1 handled better , arguably because it was 20 years newer too

I pull al sorts of crap in my 118D, it has loads of grip, and it behaves so well when you push it beyond it's grip...

That price quote is from a Canadian site. Expect the US price to be 20 to 25% less than that.

That BMWcoop.com link puts the price at $61k. With options and all the B.S. it'll easily be close to $70k.

Even at that it'll be too rich for my wallet. BMW will still sell boatloads of them, though.

As stated above, that can't be in US currency.

The current M3 coupe/sedan are base price $56-$58K (or so) in the US. The 1 M series, given its place in the lineup, will have to be significantly less. My guess is it will start at around $46K.

M cars are not just exhaust bumpers and side skirts.
1) BMW is teasing the exterior of the 1M, and that, mi amigo, is just exhaust, bumpers, and skirts.

2) While what you wrote above was true, the newer M-division cars are less engineered and more tweaked versions of the standard production cars, like the X5 and X6 and now this. It's a side effect of the new direction of turbo-charged Ms, rather than high-revving M-specific motors.
