I'm a country boy, so yes I do know. Burning isn't that bad... but the city types tend not to burn...they dump it straight into creeks, etc.

Tires here had a $5 disposal fee, not hard to figure out where many of them ended up. Our county gave up and you can now take them to the dump for free. At least they are not littering the ditches anymore.

I'm glad they are keeping it out of the landfills.
Sure wish we had that option! Most of the city disposal sites are shuttered. They made another law a few years ago that said the lube shops had to take it but we have to drop it off there. I don't mind that as my son works at the local Toyota Express facility. He keeps forgetting however..

What really bothers me about this is the technicality. If you change your own oil you can't even legally clean the drain pan without bagging the rags and hauling them to the "bio-pile" (which I've never even seen). Routine service work/leak cleanup are specifically included as prohibited per the bill. That, to me says, almost any work I do on a vehicle that generates greasy towels will now be illegal?

Umm, to top it off, oily rags/towels are just what I want sitting in the garage waiting to be hauled to a recycler. NOT! What's next? Requiring every garage have a fire suppression container? Funny, I sure thought CA would invent crap like this first!

Oh, and the other thing.. $50 first offense, $200 second and $2000 beyond..

Yea, except no. Every man woman and child in America could burn a dozen oil drenched rags a year and the earth wouldn't even notice it happened. Don't be silly.

"large problems" Classic

I'm surprised that Madison doesn't have a way to deal with this.

I had to look up bio-pile - I wonder if that works - it sure will NOT get rid of the heavy metals.

This seems to be a state law - they give you a one gallon exclusion -- for spills only.

You can also "Use as a fuel supplement in an approved municipal solid waste combustor." So, you might want to just drive over to town hall with your wheelbarrow and ask them where the solid waste combustor is.

Oh come now Randal, where's the Christmas spirit? I tell ya what, In your honor I won't use the drained engine oil from my next change to start a bonfire. We square?

Sorry for messin' up a good thread, but seriously check out the dollar store for rags. High quality super-absorbent kitchen towels/rags for pennies(in fashionable prints to boot) .

you know if your 944 was "well set up" it might not generate used oil

but, Madison sez they have 4 drop off sites, besides any oil change place, so this looks like a non-issue

Oily rags x 200 million is indeed miniscule.... I know plenty of folks who have used many gallons of old motor oil to spray on their driveways for years to keep dust at bay.... Their grass is healthy. Their well water is fine. Their ponds are healthy. Their health is fine. The wildlife on their property is fine. Don't get me wrong, I don't like to see "large" amounts of industrial toxic waste being dumped into rivers and lakes like "industry" used to do in the 70's, but some folks have gotten a bit carried away with this "save the earth" lifestyle and are trying to take it too far.

Folks who feel compelled to "save the earth" by driving their SUV half way across town to toss out what amounts to a 1/2 cup of motor oil crack me up.

PS.... Who is Bosco? Is that another derogatory playground term?
