Jeeesh guys...with this thread right now hard up against the bikini bottoms thread - I'm finding myself just a wee bit conflicted!
Edit...just realized that I've resolved my own conflict by moving this thread - so...see ya! (no...don't you dare!) Last edited by OK-944; 12-17-2020 at 07:46 AM.. |

Now THIS is an engine:
Turbo-supercharged Pratt & Whitney 28-cylinder R-4360 Wasp Major and 3,800 horsepower. ![]() And a short video with Jimmy Stewart and the B36 which had 6 of the R4360 engines. Last edited by abisel; 01-03-2021 at 09:35 AM.. |

Anything with 28 cyls on a common crank is a masterpiece (even if a maint. nightmare). That said, the elegant simplicity of turbines is equally undeniable.

A bit off topic, but... During WWII in 1944, all the companies that were producing combat and support aircraft delivered 96,270 aircraft. That is 264 aircraft per day. An outstanding accomplishment even by today's standards.

And, the metals needed to make them came from anywhere they could find it.

Yes, the scrap drives of WWII is another example of an outstanding accomplishment. The whole country did something, be it a kid's wagon full or dad's truck full. It all helped. ![]()
