Or, for $2500 you can spend 5 days at a surf camp in Chicama. You won't be thee only guy there, but there's a lot more waves than people. ![]()

I have been to Nicaragua and although it was not totally deserted it was fine with the 4 to 6 other guys we didn't know. Better than a car with racks we had double masted ketch and we sailed up the west coast of Nicaragua. Had some interesting encounters given we had technically entered the country illegally even if we never set foot on land in most cases. Always good to have a spare US twenty on hand for the local "police" and I use that word in the broadest sense.
I realize that is a still photo and that may not break all that often but one can dream. I used to go to Costa Rica back in the pre internet days and frequently we would be the only people out at most of the places we surfed. That all changed in the last 15 years. Okay Craig, you got me with the lefts... Thats a ridiculous photo... where is it?

I agree on Costa Rica. I have a friend living in Dominical and was going a couple times a year. Now Dominical is as crowded as Huntington Beach…Maybe worse. It's the same at Playa Grande and Playa Hermosa. Witches Rock looks like Rincon. All the local ticos surf now. The photo is Chicama, Peru.

The first time we surfed Pavones, it was around noon, and we had it to ourselves. The locals typically surfed in the morning & evening only. Before we left, we got a hectare overlooking the break, and for a couple years it was heaven. Then came the internet .. The Florida guys knew the swell was coming 3 days in advance, and would be camping on the beach the night before the swell arrived. Our view: ![]() |
