Been giving him antibiotics so we hope that will help him fight infection. We think this will be a double I-tooth/K9 removal. They both were in bad shape when we rescued him. I think they just pumpkined. Our vet says there is a risk of a "fistula" hole in the thin membrane where the tooth passes. The specialist is equipped to repair where our vet is not. I guess I can sit in on the procedure if I want. They encourage it.

Regarding our kitty, fingers crossed on the results. It's like watching a stroke patient walking around. She has us worried. I feel bad sequestering her to the bathroom. But her bed, food, water and c-box are there for her

Pepper does pretty good with fetch.



She is soft mouthed unless it is a stick with leafs or a snake.
Then it gets the tar shaken out of it on the way back.

The other day she had one of those Giant Japanese Hornets downed and was pawing at it.
Got on the leave it command right away. Understand a sting is very poisonous.

Last week at about 11pm she was having quite the conversation.
There was a Great Horned Owl on a brick stockade fence post hooting at her, and she was in-turn barking at it.
I say conversation because instead of jumping up at it like she does the opossum, she was just sitting there barking. And it was a weird tone barking that I haven't heard her make. And not growly at all. I had her come in and the owl kept hooting less and less frequently for about 10 minutes, then flew up to where it normally perches in the top of a cottonwood tree in my back yard. Evidently the owl wasn't finished. Maybe they were discussing the varmint, lizard and snake population? Who can hunt when etc (pun intended).

Update on Henry's oral surgery. When we rescued him from the shelter, we knew his teeth had issues from the initial check from our vet. Over the course of the past 2.5 years, our vet has cleaned and extracted a couple of his teeth, noting the severity of his K9's. her concerns with removing those is the very thin membrane that separates the nasal passage and root, such that if it is ruptured by either infection or removal, she did not have the equipment to make the necessary repair.

Well, today in Henry's case, it was "worse case" scenario. What was suppose to be a two hour procedure with recovery ended up being much longer.... dropped off at 0900 and then picked up at 1600. I am very thankful that I made the 1.5 hour drive to this dental expert in a Grass Valley. Henry had two fistula from the K9's, one badly infected that required a double reinforced repair and then a molar was discovered so badly decayed that it was infecting the jaw bone. The vet stated that had our vet attempted this extraction, Henry's jaw would have likely been broken.

Needless to say, this little guy was run through the ringer and is in for a tough couple of days as meds wear off and his prescribed RX kicks in. He is a very quiet dog......normally but I guess he was grumbling a lot at the vet and has been noisy all night. I guess I would too if I had my mouth torn apart. The gal at the counter instructed me to start his meds in the morning but I just re-read the written instructions about starting the pain meds tonight. Needless to say we are now behind the pain management curve.

So class, what is today's lesson? Get your four legged family members teeth cleaned regularly. AND BRUSH THEIR TEETH ON A VERY REGULAR BASIS....(forgot to add that little nugget, as pointed out on a later post)

The vet did say that these teeth were more likely the cause of all his woes this past year, tummy, feeling poorly, hacking, etc. he is likely to perk up a bit since he is now no longer in chronic tooth pain. Made me feel like a bad human/parent.

Was given a light sedative to calm him down in the exam room. The funny part was that he fell into a deep sleep to the point where he coughed/hacked and farted at the exact time. Came from both ends.


Everything he endured


Even got a small bag with the majority of the four extracted teeth.

Little guy is uncomfortable to say the least.

We have 2 dogs, one is a mini-dachshund and the other is a rescue. I think we spent about $2-3k on the mini dachshund's teeth last year (cleaning and extractions). Dachshunds are known for getting bad teeth, apparently. this year, we spent about $3k on both dogs teeth (cleaning and extractions most of which were on the big dog). The dachshund had infection and bone loss in several spots, but fortunately, they turned out to not be worst case ie, broken jaw or partial jaw bone removal etc....

So, the lesson for the day is not to get your pups teeth cleaned regularly, the lesson is to brush their teeth. I don't want to spend a couple grand a year on their teeth, and I prefer them to be healthy and not have to have a major cleaning, so I have started brushing their teeth. Both dogs are about 12-13 years old, so neither is super happy about it, but it's not been that bad. I have been using the pet toothpaste as recommended by the veterinary dentist that's been doing the work.



You can even get a "kit" from amazon that comes with toothpaste and a toothbrush.

The dachshund doesn't enjoy the process, but loves the toothpaste (so far we've used "poultry", "beef" and "seafood"). I don't smell the toothpaste, but they must taste it.

We were told that you really only need to do the sides. I just hold their top lip up with one hand and give a few passes with the brush on the outside of the side teeth with the other and then do the other side.

I really wish we'd started years ago, but I guess it's better late than never.

Thanks for the info on the toothpaste, Steve. I bought a little brush that goes on the end of your finger for my girls and it makes it much easier than trying to use a conventional designed toothbrush.

How did your little guys do this go around, all good we hope?. After this past week, we needed some happy news. Our pets are part of our family and they bring happiness to our world.

Our vet is the best we have ever had. The staff is great and we couldn't be happier. They joke with me we when we visit and tell me I'm the pet whisperer since I've had some success with a few of their difficult furry clients that happen to be there when we are. They kept trying to give us the office kitty since I was the only one who could get him to be civilized.
