Foose is talented with respect for heritage. He could not improve a 911 and probably would not try.

He always starts out with very wiped out cars. If that's what I had, then yes, please, even though it would be a rush job.
Take my 2002!

Foose has done VWs and Porsches. Awesome work too. He's also a hell of a nice guy. I'd have him work on my car in a heartbeat.

Good responses.........
Yep, good discussions! Just to put some issues to bed, I also believe that Chip Foose is a very talented individual. And, I actually like most of his builds, some better than others. The key to my question was, would you be willing to let someone else build your 911 rather than doing it yourself. I know that my talents and connections will never even come close to those of Chip Foose but I actually enjoy taking something apart and doing a restoration or maybe even an upgrade. Then, when it is all back together and the time comes to go back on the road, I have a certain satisfaction level knowing that "I" did it! I know that not everyone would do things the way that I would and certainly expect that some might even not like my work/end results. But that's ok, they can build their car the way they want it to be!

We were at a Cars and Coffee in Irvine a few years ago with the spyder. Foose was there with a couple of his cars (the Hemisfear cars). He looked at the spyder across the parking lot and headed toward it! I'm like HOLY CRAP STEVE CHIP FOOSE IS COMING OVER HERE!!
So Steve says "do NOT miss this picture...." The wretched camera had a nearly dead battery and I missed all the pics except this one (the hawaiian shirt is Steve, Foose at least is visible/recognizable). Me missing the good shots is a point in our long marriage that shall NEVER be forgotten or go unmentioned in gatherings... ![]() Anyway, Chip Foose is a very nice man. He really liked the car my husband built and was clearly not only the motor head we expect him to be, but quite a Porsche fan as well. angela

People go down to his shop and wander around during lunch when no work is going on. I did that once. Chip was there along with his wife, who I didn't know at the time. My friend and I were about to go have lunch next door at a little cafe and I asked Foose if he wanted to get a bite.
Kinda screwed the pooch on that one not knowing his wife was standing in the same room. He declined, of course. The shop was not overrun with people but there were a dozen or so wandering in and out. The shop was messy and full to the gills. They were just about the move into a newer and bigger shop down the street. Right around the corner is Erik Hansson's place, Scandinavian Street Rods. Erik builds 32 Fords and has a big reputation. He came over from Sweden after establishing a pretty big hot rod business there. He has a huge European clientele. But he says he's here in Huntington Beach because that's where it all happens. A lot of it does. A clip from Rod and Custom: "He's [Chip Foose] one of the most well-known car designers in the USA and has created big winners for his customers, including eight Grand National Roadster Show winners and three Ridler winners. Now he is building a war bird-looking hot rod for himself. It all started a couple of years ago when Chip got an old stock '32 chassis from his dad, Sam, who had updated a '32 coupe for a customer with a complete new chassis. Chip had a little plan to build a '32 for himself, but the chassis was nearly too nice to cut up. After talking to Erik Hansson at nearby Scandinavian Street Rods, the problem was solved because Erik wanted the stock chassis, and to get it he would build a new old-looking chassis for Chip." Now, if Chip would ever agree to do a full restoration and keep the car looking as it did when the factory pushed it out the door, or maybe with some reasonable upgrades (no 20 inch tires/wheels, and no getto blaster stereo) then I would be standing in line!

OK...imagine this scenario. You have a clapped out 77 911 with a blown 2.7
. You spouse or whoever sets it up and informs Foose of some things you've been interested by. Say Banning's silver chopped top 911 Mulholland legend. Jack olsens black beauty. A couple of the LS1 chevy conversions conversions. Some of the original IROC cars. The 911r lightweights. The casr painted in drk grey mettalic. It could be a hoot. ![]() Or he could hire MotorMeister to rebuild the 2.7,

Why is that any different from the resto-rod styles that so many hot-rodders build including Chip Foose (among Foose's many build designs)? angela

Agree but what I did is to take my late model car back to early specs. If he would do that with a couple of cars I would watch every show he has. Just that my tastes are not "early hot rod" with the silly 20" tires and so on. As well would love to see a full restoration on a FJ-40 Cruiser or Land Rover that simply just restored the vehicle (with some nice but tasteful upgrades) so that it looked nice but not over the top IMHO. Joe

Foose builds cars like that all of the time. Not an FJ - but you get the idea.

So you've got your dad's '64 Fairlane 427 that is in shambles. Foose takes the car, paints it anything but stock, puts a huge thumper under the hood with billet everything, some pumpin' stereo, a 2-tone cloth and leather interior scheme, some suspension and brake upgrades and a set of 20's with rubber bands on them.
Then he gives it back to you in front of the whole crowd. I'm sorry, but I couldn't gush over that. In fact, I'd be pissed. If I had my dad's anything, I'd want it stock or the way he had it. Now, I don't have my dad's anything, but we do have the wife's father's old WWII Jeep which he hot rodded back in the 60's. It's got a SBC conversion. It was worse than shambles when I got it to "restore." I tried to put myself in his shoes as I went about doing the work and buying the parts. It had been through the ownership of a brother and a nephew before I got it. I took all their crap off and sold it. As a result, my wife has her dad's Jeep. Way it should be. |

Kinda like the 1969 XJ in my signature below. My Father bought this car brand new then sold it to me after some years. Its covered 700,000 miles and been in storage for 22 years when I was overseas. It will never be sold but sure wish I could get it looking like it was he was driving it... Joe A PS no spouse for the last 12 years so...

Milt, I'm starting to think that you've never watched the show. Are you thinking of "Pimp My Ride"? Foose does a good job of providing what his customer wants. If the customer was a grumpy old fart that wanted a stock resto, he would do just that.
I've never seen an episode where he goes against what the family wants.

I've only seen a dozen or so shows. Make no mistake, I like the guy. But he seems to have one channel. His wheels, his feature stripe on the side (which they show him personally taping it off) and a standard set of bolt on exhaust, motor, suspension parts.
I saw one VW van in person, not the one shown in this thread, that Foose had done. Lowered (of course) custom steel wheels and some bodywork. This van was not "stolen" but offered up for him to do his thing. The owner told me the whole story right down to the contract he signed that said he would not sell or change it and that he would show it x number of times, all of this for one year. The VW owner was not all that happy about the whole thing, from the incompletion to having things not work, taking it back, etc. The engine sounded good. |
