Lynskey Pro Cros
Been riding a 2006 Bianchi Axis for all my cyclocross/off road needs. I probably put about 3k miles on it a year give or take. I wanted to upgrade and also get off aluminum. I really don't like the idea of banging around like I do on carbon. So, I decided to go titanium. I also wanted a good fork, Ultegra 6800 hydraulic discs and some solid training rims. Enter Lynskey Pro Cross.

BTW, the Moots Psychlo build I came up with was like $7700. Ouch! Then I saw Lynskey sold their frames on ebay at a big discount. I've never built a bike from scratch. Ok, here I go! After a couple weeks of sniping, I finally scored a Med-Lg Pro Cross and their full cyclocross carbon (#4) fork. So, now I have to get all the parts to make this work. I came across a few problems right off the bat. There are a few specifications I'd never come across: thru-axle, press fit bottom bracket, discs, IS headset. Wheels: You try to find thru axle/disc rims! I came up with Zipp 30 Courses and Stans Notubes, both pretty high at +$700, not exactly training rims to me at least. On a tip from a friend, I reached out to Ben Cole at Velomine.com in Springfield Il, kinda local to me. Sourcing Ultegra 6800 hydraulic disc is not as easy as you think. There are a few websites that let you mix and match the components. Texas CycleSport had a good site but mostly it was the phone calls and emails that worked for me. They assured me their Wheels Mfg. bottom bracket they supplied with the groupo would fit fine. I got the compact crank at 175mm, the medium cage derailleur to match the 11-32 cassette and hydraulic/11 speed levers and calipers.
There seems to be a dizzying array of headset specifications. In the end, mine seemed simple enough. I needed "IS 42/52". WTF is that? I ended up calling Cane Creek and got the low down. My frame has the bearing races already pressed in the frame. All I really needed was the bearings and no special tools to install. Cane Creek and Campy offer bearings for my threadless tapered integrated headset. I ended up going with Cane Creek 110. |
I don't know if anyone has dealt with thru axle stuff. It seems to be a MTB thing that's slowly invading the road market. So, the skewers listed on the cycling parts sites say thing like "Fits Grasshoppers or RockShock." So, here's what I found about thru axle.
There appear to be three basic configurations: plugs, bolts and simple thru axles. The plugs screw in with a 5mm Allen and have no handle. The bolts have what most closely resembles an old fashion skewer with a nut on one end and a cam handle on the other. The simple thru-axle has a cam or ratchet on one end and threads on the other which thread into the dropout or fork itself. Lynskey employs simple thru axles. You can see the differences on the DT Swiss site, components/RWS. BTW, RWS is DTS’s ratchet system that takes the place of the typical cam lever. I needed the last spec, simple thru axle: Rear Thru Axle - 12mm x 142mm x 1.0 Pitch Front 15mm x 100mm x 1.5 thread pitch In the end, the ONLY site that had a good description and exact sizes was this odd. They shipped the same day I ordered. |

I really do like a Ti bike with some paint on it. hope to ride one some day and see if they are all that and a bag of chips.
