What did you built it up with? Campy SR, like it should?:D I have never been a fan of the Mavic components. Hey it does have Modolo, I wanted them for my Casati I see the yellow saddle now. Remember the seat covers? |
It's amazing Greg made it out alive, riding all those years without a helmet and fancy eyewear!!
(Notice the Alpe d'Huez freewheel!!) |
The proverbial corncob! :)
I ride the Gitane with the Sidis, clips and (loose!) straps. It's intimidating after so many years riding clipless, but you do get used to it. The bike is all Campy SR. These are some 1984 fotos I found that were extremely helpful in ID'ing components: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1535307266.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1535307623.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1535307623.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1535307623.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1535307623.jpg |

That's pretty typical of what they did back then. Some of those photos and bikes had been burned into my brain. I spend hours looking at magazines during class instead of listening to my Bio or English teacher about American Lit. I got hold of some French magazine, Miroir du cyclisme through our club. They were very rare in the us at the time.
Campy SR with Cinelli bars and stem (1A). Benotto tape and typical Mavic wheels, Regina Freewheels and Sedis Chains(?) and Binda or Christoph straps if they were French. The finer details are the type or water bottle cages and steel or alloy seat rails, track pedals or typ. road ones with the quill. I did noticed and very interesting how the straps are routed through the back of the pedals instead of the side. The cokes ones were usually handed out by the tour organization during the race and such? Why did you decided to use the Coke bottles isntead of the Renault one from the team? |
You seem to be a big fan of LeMond?

The Coca-Cola bottles were a Tour de France thing only and that went on for decades --all teams used them. I do have the Renault-Elf Gitane bottle as well (of course! ;) ).

Did your shoe come apart from the lack of support by the strap when you switched to clipless? My Sidis came apart after little miles on them from switching over. Where did you get the pantograph LeMond big ring? That's rare too
|
I've got modern shoes for my clipless bike. The Sidis are only used with the Gitane and were a thrift store find! $3 and looked to be used only once or twice :) Another thing I discovered doing research for the bike is many racers in that period used Pista/track pedals (look at those service pics I posted). Not sure why. I've got Galli titanium road pedals and Ti BB on the Gitane (the only 2 non-SR components). SR LeMond chainring was another fleaBay find. Saddle is a Bernard Hinault Edition of the Turbo.

We used track pedals for crit racing to get a little more clearance in the corners. Even when you coast in a corner, it can help you get on the pedals a little quicker.
My revolutions didn’t really get loose with clipless pedals but the Velcro would so I did wag at LeMond did and put a toe strap around the shoe. It worked until Sidi came out with the Genius shoe with buckles. I’ve worn versions of them ever since. |
Yep, what mepstein said about the pedals. I was waiting around for a training ride to start, this must be around 84, Ron Skarin (72, 76 Olympic) said, "Cut those pedal quill out for better corner clearance or buy a set of track pedals. so you can pedal round' the turns"
Lots of the Cat I and II riders had campy track pedals. A couple years later, I took the advice from our hot dog national rider and bought a set of MKS track pedals, made in Japan. Oh the horror, from some of the guys, a Japanese pedal on my Italian bike. |

I'm guessing that F1 pic was some sort of sponsor promo race. Here's one with Siffert and others. Is that Clay Regazzoni with the Heuer Autavia in the foreground?
