I have been slowly digesting this race all week.
Races from the front- staying in front of traffic. Races from the back- clearing through traffic. What I love is the sheer love they have at the top. The guy in my video yells "f3$l yeah". The guy in your video laughs as he slides down the mountain next to his bike. Either way- pure joy! Here is another video I found... watch the commentary. A little annoying, yet AMAzING!!!This is a good breakdown starting around 2:00. Watch it for about 6 minutes and try to pick the lines you'd take- as well as listen to what the rider says.. Interesting. https://youtu.be/MQHJn0U_JBM Last edited by LEAKYSEALS951; 09-14-2018 at 04:49 PM.. |

I'll bet a nice drilled Campy Super Record crank would work quicker...

Brought back some memories. I used to pour over, and borrow those late 70s early 80s imported magazines from our cub. I can't read French, but could go over and over those pictures looking at their form, set up and riding position and of course, their equipment. This was all I did in Biology class. I no longer follow the Tour but when I see a last name like Van Impe or Peeters, I just know that's one of those old rider's kid.
Were you riding during the late 70s or early 80s? |

![]() Yeah, I probably bought my first serious road race bike in 73. Bought a brand new P13 Paramount in 1975. Very difficult to follow what was going on in Europe in those days!! Me (blue jersey) racing across the border in Canada in 1977 or so. ![]() Edit: I wish I still had that Seiko Speed Timer I was wearing!

Wow, you been around for some time. Was the racing any bigger in Canada? Where was that, Ontario? During that time, I think it was bigger in Quebec due to the amount of French there. Is that a Bell Biker you have on?
You got that right about getting European info on racing. We stumbled upon the LA Downtown main library (damn book reports) imported Le Gazzetta dello Sport but only to arrive about 3 weeks after the published date. It was better then nothing. This was 1983. Velonews was our life line to racing, both local and European info. During the Tour, the LA times would published who was in the lead and the time. If I remember correctly, this was around 86 when I noticed it. Do you remember Intentional Cycle Sport, a British mag. Somehow our huge library had a subscription again, a month or two late sometimes but were were just too happy to look at all the archives going back ten years. We learned about the Spring Classics and riders other then Merckx or Hinault but LeMond was really our hero. You remember Roger Young? I met him a couple years ago. His girl friend lives a couple houses from a friend of mine (He sells air cool parts). He just started riding and noticed Roger unloading a bunch of bikes and started chit chating and mention the name to me. |

Seems to me that all the big names have some attitude, temper tantrum or else they aren't made for winning? |

I met Davis Phinney and his wife Connie. Connie and Shaun Wallace coached me on the track. All three were world class cyclists and class acts. That's actually sort of the norm. The best (not including one multiple tour winner) are usually the nicest.

Oh boy, I remember Phinney winning the USA championship race back at the east coast back in around 83 or so? That's the first I hear of him. Saw it live on TV for all of 5 min. Some of the those guys have to be normal folks, or else the world wouldn't turn, but I have never really met any hot shot champions. Rode a few training rides with Thurlow Rogers and a bunch of nut jobs freakishly strong socal riders. I met CArpenter way back when I started riding when she was sponsored by Puch. She came out here for a local race. It was a big thing then.

One of my good friends raced for Pepsi fannini when his teammate - Roberto gagiolli wone the big race in philly. Roberto was a character and the party at my friends house after the race was awesome. TV stations, other pros, hot girls, etc.
The mt bike pros were even cooler. Specialized flew me out to Tahoe for a big company event with Ned Overend and crew. Somehow the sponsoring hotel mixed up and put me in a penthouse suite. It became party central for the long weekend. Good times!
