My new to me MTB. 10 year old NS Eccentric Cromo

The previous owner was running it as a winter beater with 40mm rims and 3” tires.

New wheelset, tune up and professional firting.

Had a nice shake down ride this morning. First time on something more technical than a gravel path.

Next up, the drop post needs to be serviced and I will need to replace the fork at some point, the anodizing is wearing thin but it’s not leaking at the moment

I must say this, those steel, alum, or Ti frames are still the best looking bikes in my eyes. I really like Independent Fabrication from back then. You get much of them down in your neck of the woods?
Sorry for the delay.

This is one of the best known Australian builders - "Kenevans". He's still building frames to order: https://kenevansframes.com.au/

Non original carbon fork - 54cm square - Campagnolo Chorus.

I love the feel of modern carbon bikes but this thing rides like a dream.

Crazy Spinergy wheels. I had a set of Spinergy wheels on my ProFlex/K2 mountain bike in the 90s. Kevlar spokes with a carbon and aluminum hub.

A REALLY good day for Team USA today at the World Championships in Canada today.

I won't give it away if you've recorded it but three Americans in the top 10 is unbelievable.

I'm pretty happy today.

I had a set of forks built for my Fat tire BMX bike, very pleased with the results, but it probably weighs more than some of the bikes posted here.

^^^ That's me when I see my friend Steve shoot full-gas down a steep, technical singletrack knowing I have to follow.

I just replaced the chainrings on my trusty old Schwinn Supersport, which has an old Ultegra crankset with the standard 130 mm BCD. I wound up buying a set of Stronglight chainrings out of France. They are beautiful and light as can be. But I have a question...

Why does no one make steel chainrings? I ask that question at my local bike shop and they look at me like I'm daft. Like no one has ever even considered it. Well, for a guy my age (66) and for the riding I do, I am far more interested in durability than weight. I ran into this same thing on my Ducati Supersport many years ago when I switched from an aluminum rear sprocket to a steel one. Same reason - durability. And, well, quite frankly (and rather unsurprisingly), I simply could not tell the difference. Other than going from buying rear sprockets by the six pack every year to buying one every couple, three years. I would like to do that on my Schwinn Supersport as well. Am I outa my mind? Are they even available?

I think steel chainrings are common on entry level bikes. I'm sure you can order one

Jeff, lightweight sells bike and parts. To wear out an alum. chain ring, you have to put in lots of gear meshing miles on it. I have never worn out a front ring (some starts to get the shark tooth shape after some miles). Those Shimano, ultegra, even 105 or the el-cheapo rings are pretty dang durable.

To be fair, I bought the bike new in 1995 when I was still very actively riding. I put an awful lot of miles on it over the course of the next ten years, commuting on it in addition to riding recreationally. I think I replaced the chainrings maybe twice at the very most. Then I pretty much stopped riding until two years ago.

When I started again, I went through the whole bike, of course. The chainrings looked great. Two years later they were shot. I ride 3-5 days per week, averaging maybe 150 miles per week. Is that about the normal wear rate?

These things are, of course, relatively cheap, readily available, and very easy to replace. I probably shouldn't worry about it. Seems to me, though, that I could buy a set of steel chainrings and not worry about it literally for the rest of my life. As an aside, it's a little distressing that I'm thinking about things like this in those terms...
