As I understand it, the mishap in NC happened at the zip tie checkers area. Guy dropped his shotgun, which was in a case, and it fired wounding 3, thankfully not seriously. This on Saturday. Sunday show will not allow any guns to be carried in. Only vendors. No private sales. Again, as I understand it.

Huge flood of new gun owners in the last few years. And former gun owners now gun owners again. And gun owners with shiny new carry permits. The numbers are ballooning.

The safety training required to purchase a gun is ZERO in every state I've lived in. The safety training required to get a carry permit is pretty CLOSE TO ZERO too.

So, whaddya expect?

You know how a sport or activity gets ruined by popularity and all the bozos that popularity brings?

P.S. Five people shot at gun shows this weekend. The three shot by the bozo with the shotgun. A fourth shot himself while trying to unload his pistol. A fifth shot by a gun dealer who was inspecting a gun.

Remember their safety starts with you and educating them. I had a friend who deliberately left a pistol out once to see what his kids would do. They saw it, left the room, and immediately came and got him. Not how I would handle it but my 8 year old can already recite and understand the rules..

1. Every gun is to be considered loaded.
2. Never point a gun at something you don't want dead/destroyed.
3. If holding a weapon, muzzle in the air or ground. If someone walks in front of path, immediately point it up or down.
4. Finger stays in ready position untill you are ready to fire.
5. If you see a gun without Dad around, LEAVE IMMEDIATELY.

We've practiced with a paintball gun. He gets it.

Bottom line is they need to be taught first, and then also deal with your Pops.

Every time I pick up a gun I check it's unloaded. Even in a gun shop.

And It's pointed downwards as I inspect it or in a direction with no people.

Umm, twice I've found a gun to be unexpectedly loaded. Once someone had borrowed my .22 without my knowledge and left one in the chamber and once I'd left the .45 loaded - gulp.

John, Chris, and Bill, I concur with everything you guys posted...it's the way I was brought up too. Both of my grandparents raised seven kids and countless grandkids, and that was "just the way it was" back then. Now I fear this "mania" is like giving 16 year old boys the keys to a new Corvette because they make "good grades". Perfectly within a parent's "right", but foolhardy just the same for "many" (if not most). Thank you all...

The shop went to a home the other day and bought the guns of a man who was taken to a home with alzheimers. My first job after the arrived was to check every gun to see if it was safe to shoot. There were 36 guns. Half were loaded with full magazines. None were ever in a safe.

Though most of mine reside in a safe..."one" is always accessible. The vast majority of owners I've known in my lifetime (and that's a BUNCH) do not. Just curious David...I'm like Bill, and have never EVER picked one up without checking to see if it's loaded. What happens in your shop?

And what training would have prevented a gun dealer from having an AD? The man has probably bought and sold more guns than all of us here combined, probably handles 50 guns a day. He's an idiot and no amount of training will fix that. And there's just about nowhere in the US that you need a carry permit to carry a cased shotgun into a gun show. He was an idiot too. With the lawsuits these guys are looking at, they'll be lucky if they can ever afford a squirt gun in the future.

My "unloaded" guns comment was meant to be understood as "never assume an unloaded gun."

Once someone handed me a rifle that he said was not loaded. It was though. Gotta check no matter what.

I treat every gun like it's loaded until I have checked it. While it's on my bench I don't worry. Once it is out of my hands I check it again like it's new. I even clear guns on display before I give them to a customer, sometimes just to instill that procedure on them.
Black powder long guns are always treated as loaded until it has been determined they are not. About 30% that are trade ins are loaded, some twice.

Drop the mag,
Rack the slide,
Check the chamber,
Check the well.

Me too. That's why it's fine to keep them loaded around the house. I already treat them that way, so there's no surprise. We have no kids and Mrs. Lee doesn't mess with them unless we're at the range.

Had a talk with my wife about this exact topic yesterday after a weekend at her parent's house. They live in central KS on 40 acres, and her dad and brother are big-time hunters. There are ALWAYS shotguns sitting out. My super-curious 2 year old pointed out one of "papa's gun" leaning by the garage door where he could easily access it. I checked it to find a shell chambered and the safety off. All that it would take is my little guy to go pull the trigger.........not good. My 8 year old has a .22 and I have drilled gun safety into his head, but the 2 year old doesn't know any better. Living like that might be fine for them, but when my kids are around it's not going to cut it.

No clarification needed...most of us knew exactly what you meant. Someone hands me a spoon...I'm checking it too (even if I just watched them check)...

Guys like you (and I'm sure RL too), it only takes about 5 seconds to know if they "get it" or not...

Another question...I'll never "dry fire" a piece with a fixed firing pin, but on a .45, I'll point it to the ground and pull the trigger after following your routine. I rarely visit a spoon shop, but wish more would "instill the procedure" as you do....kudos!

I spoke with my wife and asked her to talk with her dad, so that's step 1. Frankly she should be just as concerned as I. I'll follow up with her to insure that the conversation has happened before our next visit. If I don't see any change the next time we are there, I will probably just talk to him myself. I have a really good relationship with my in-laws, but I also don't see it as my place to bring it up. "Never make your spouse the bad guy" when dealing with your parents, I think that's important in marriage.

i am ASTOUNDED by your reaction here re: your kids and firearms being left OUT with rds in pipe and SAFETY OFF!

being a father of 2 boys i learned along time ago(one 27 the other 23), that YOU CANT PUPPY PROOF ANYWHERE ENOUGH! if they can screw with it they will. yes YOU ACTUALLY HAVE TO TAKE TIME OUT OF YOUR DAY TO PUPPY PROOF ANYWHERE KIDS ARE!

i am also astounded by how many people dont have spoon safes when kids around. it doesnt matter if ya beat their azz silly...............kids will always feek with something. doesnt matter what it is. you or wifey turn yer back............they will be into it quicker than snot. say "NO" and they will be into it even quicker.

if i was you i would lay down the ultimatum and either the firearms are SECURED or you guys dont evar come back!

but hey wtf do i know? ya know what i know?????????????

having a DEAD KID REALLY SUCKS BECUZ SOMEONE/ ANYONE WAS STOOPID!

both my kids and myself (3X) went thru hunter safety courses. along with CCW and match shooting safety.

plus my lifelong drill instructor was my father and he carried a M-1 and a .45, 5 years straight in combat..................and killed people, a HELL OF A LOT OF PEOPLE!

there is NO ACCIDENTAL DISCHARGES! it is FEEKED UP STOOPID DISCHARGES!

save yerself a hell of a lot of grief and lay the ultimatum on them. either spoons secured or ya dont go back. each and everydamn one of them. hiding them under the undies or socks DONT GET IT!

secure them in a SAFE!
