To quote Nixon: 'we could do that, but it would be wrong.'

Good answers: I can't see any floor damage but I'm sure it is damaged. But the pass door works perfect and the trunk opens and closes. no broken glass engine lid ok. We have a lot of good talented guys in our shops and this is what we do, so..... could do it. The guy I work for now used to work for me and we're still pals and this is what he does.

Haven't bought it yet but I think I will if only to stick it in my garage for later. PS Always wanted to do a hot rod Porsche powered V dub bus. If I could find a good rustfree body.

Also, (sit down if you need to) I always wanted and never had a mid year vette. Maybe now is the time. Nassau blue.

So much to do so little time.

given your history with this car, what would be the perfect 911 for you?

consider this your "starter 911" & use it set your path

If time is an issue, don't attempt to repair it. It'll never get finished!
But if the suspension pickups and pan is straight then it's repairable.
If I've learned anything about restorations, it's to start with the best base you can. Rusty or damaged base cars never end well.

This very car is the one I always wanted. I never drove it without saying aloud "Gawd, I like this car". ( I would drive with my left arm out the window sometimes and last Monday I just barely got it back in the car when I got hit.)

Wouldn't be tying shoelaces today if I hadn't pulled it back in.

Put the drivetrain into a clean 914 shell

You are hurt worse than you think you are, sore ear is from bouncing the side of your melon of the inside of the car. There is absolutely no way that your neck is not damaged, none.

I kinda live in a "Porsche-free zone"., so finding good tubs and such is tough. Waiting to finalize all this and will update.

Great that you could get your car back. The porsche powered VW buss is a cool idea. Check out the race buss on the Samba.
I Will be interested to see what the brain trust comes up with as far as other directions to go with it. Sand rail, offroad buggy, rat rod, etc. The sky is the limit.

I think that is a good move whether you fix it or not. Sure, the car is definitely totalled, but that's the economic side of things. If you do decide to investigate fixing it just pull the door and seats and decide whether you want to weld in the door sill, inner sill, lock post and all that. Maybe it will need a LH floor pan.

If you get that far, then you can rack it and check out the suspension and mounting points. There is no reason to write off the car until you understand what it needs. If that car was sitting here that's exactly what I'd do.

If you want to take detailed pics of all you find, good and bad, there are enough of us here to tell you what might be done, what is feasible and what the outcome might be.

And I guess you know quite a bit about this yourself, so dig in and we'll follow along.

BTW, if you put the build thread over on the 911 tech BBS, be sure to link that here.

Good luck.

Edit: Looking more closely at the pics, I see about 4 hours on the lower A pillar once you get the front fender off. At the very least, you need a front fender (that dent is hard to fix, but fixable. It's only time...now), a door and the entire rear quarter from package tray to the base of the A pillar. Get the car on a lift and check for any buckling at the floor where the pedals mount. That can be terminal.

Thanks for more kind words. I know I can always get help here. My plan, like yours, is to go slow and evaluate before dumping a ***** load of money in it. If it's not smart I will keep it in my spare garage, just to have.

I've got a lot of good friends here, who do this kind of work. I think they will take this on just because they can. And they know how much I liked this car.

I think we'll do OK one way or the other.

T-Boned back home

Drove it a bit at towing yard, seems to run fine, shifts fine, tire is rubbing (of course).

Giving some thought to avoiding all this repair business, and upgrading a bit.

Looking at some Cayman S 's. And looking at a couple of nice 1990 C4's. Not cool like the 83-89 cars but......not sure I've got the stomach for a W/O rebuild.

Opinions?

Well, if you keep the cover on it, it will always look like you want it too. A lot of guys build cars that are considered totalled but you do end up with a salvage title. Something else to consider.

All it takes is time and mostly time is money. Sometimes it's not.

3 years ago I sold a very tired but good looking '88 911 for 12K. That with the parts from your car might have gone for 20. And it would have had a clean title, albeit with a ton of chassis miles.

Does it ever really pencil out? I don't think so unless you are ruthless.

Worst case, you could probably turn a profit if you part it out.
