This can be said of much of the country. We are a competitive country and we hate it when someone else gets ahead. The big squeeze is on now and people are getting worried about their futures and many vent this worry through acts of jealousy or envy of others. FIDO. F*ck It, Drive On.

I've said it before around here, that the only power most people have is to piss other people off. That's why they clog the left lane on the freeway, race past us in their Priuses, flip each other off and speed away, make all the noise they can with their vehicles at all hours and basically act like a-holes as much as possible. I call it the lizard brain. Most people are not in control of their emotional impulses and their lizard brains cause them to make stupid gestures and comments at the rest of us. FIDO. Oh, and try to see them coming and avoid and ignore.

They love to piss us off but they hate to be ignored. Smile as they flip you off, it'll make them crazier and they'll simmer because you ignored them.

Half of my neighbors refuse to acknowledge me when I am outside. Three Porsches and a Mercedes in the drive has a tendency to do that, but you know what, if that is the way they are, I really don't want to be around them in the first place. I just waive as they drive by because I waive to everybody that drives by.
The kids are the best!

BTW, you and Queen Elizabeth II have something is common.

I'm going to be doing something similar with a '10 997 4S next month; my travels will take me through MT so I'm looking forward to seeing some real people get as crazy as we are for these vehicles!

P.S. Bringing some French Roast along with me cause 6am at McDonalds (drinking fully leaded) is a sin, right?!?!? ;-p

New England is full of people who deem suffering to be a badge of honor - because it was settled by Calvinists and similar religious sects.

I get thumbs up from all sorts of different people here; never had a negative directed at the car.

Is there any possibility that something else PO'd your neighbors?

Driving across MT has its advantages. Vast, wide open spaces with virtually no traffic. I've heard that some *ahem* rather irresponsible sports car owners will test the upper speed limits of their cars in such places. Random photo *ahem* I found on the internet.

Only a compliment once in a while. They ask what year. But in LA you see some variant of a 911 about every five minutes on the road.

Lol...whoever the irresponsible sports car owner was must've had a headwind.

I look forward to returning to those vast wide open spaces soon...

And in Houston - you can go weeks without seeing another Porsche in the wild. Not counting my own - of course!

Being a hater is ingrained in certain cultures and groups of people. I grew up in Minnesota, which is a great place in certain ways, but it has a deeply ingrained Scandinavian ethic that absolutely hates any display of wealth or success. It's ok to be slightly upper middle class, but that's about it. Anything that could be considered bragging in any way, including expensive cars, is really frowned upon by a lot of people.

My BIL, a successful cardiologist who could own any car on earth, buys only Volvos/Toyotas/Chevys and the like, and he has a deep hatred for BMW owners that dates back to his college days and some stereotype about rich frat boys or something. I schit you not.

I don't like ostentatious idiots but I absolutely despise the hater mentality. Ironically, IMO, one group completely devoid of this mentality is poor people in the ghetto or 'hood. I've driven many a high-dollar car through the hood and gotten nothing but smiles and "thumbs up" type of greetings. They absolutely love expensive cars. Weird, huh?

Really? I see them every day. Granted, not that many older models, but I see lots of boxsters and newer 911s, then the occasional 993 and then declining numbers as you get older from there which makes sense.

I worked at an auto parts store in the hood of Tampa for a while when I was younger. For the most part, the folks that I dealt with there were the nicest, most courteous, down to earth folks I have ever dealt with.

Same here even in podunk Wichita. I bet I see at least one Porsche daily. Now when I had the Maserati, THAT got some attention. Kids were the best because they would point and stare.

I get nothing but nice compliments about mine....just last week at a semi-rural cross roads station (where I can get 93 non-ethanol )...: "what year is it? you sure don't see many of those any more". Black guy, 'bout my age at an intersection a few weeks ago: Is it "natural"? I'm thinking turbo vs n/a, so I say "it sure is!" Him: "It doesn't sound natural with a big thumbs up. But kids are always the best....never fails

Haters gonna hate...

Sell your Porsches and buy a Miata. Someone's going to hate you for that too. Talk like a Pirate, and see where that gets you.

You problem is that you think they are responding to you, when in reality there is a little subprogram in their minds that is telling them what to think. With more interaction, you could probably win them over.

Ever had someone screw you over in a business deal because they are jealous of the car you drive ? Now THAT'S a real eye opener there. Your neighbors are cupcakes.

BTW, I was driving in the Berkshires a number of years ago, and I saw a really nice old Ferrari convertible out in front of a crappy looking coffee shop. I mean a genuine million dollar car, the kind that would fit in at Pebble Beach. The owner was a really nice guy and very approachable. When I told him how much I liked his car, he told me he was very fortunate to have it.

That is what I tell people about my cars. But it is the people like the Ferrari owner that I would prefer to talk to, and not the twinkies and the cupcakes.

Haters always gonna hate something.

I am waiving at you right now with 1/5 of my hand.

And yeah the kids are great. I will usually let them sit in the car and such if they are polite and the parents are cool with it.
